India’s second largest auto company by volume, Hyundai is planning a new compact SUV for India since sometime. Referred to as the Styx, the sub-4 meter SUV will be the smallest SUV in the country yet by Hyundai. Now, word has it that the company may launch the vehicle by the end of May or early June this year. Before bringing the Styx to India, Hyundai will present the vehicle at the New York Auto Show in April, 2019. This will mark the company’s foray into the highly competitive sub-4 meter SUV segment, which will see the launch of the Mahindra XUV300 on 14th of this month.
The Styx will be inspired by the Carlino concept showcased at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The front fascia of the SUV will feature a split headlamp design which is found on company’s bigger models like the Santa Fe and Kona. The split projector headlamps with LED DRLs will be accompanied by Hyundai’s signature cascading grille. The side profile is inspired by the Hyundai Creta with similarly styled C-pillar and roof line, albeit shorter in length. The rear will feature LED tail lights and is also expected to be styled along the lines of the Creta.
Other features the Styx will come with will be machine cut alloys, leather seats, soft touch dashboard and door panels, touchscreen infotainment system, steering mounted controls, 6 airbags, sunroof, ABS with EBD, lane assist and start-stop, keyless entry among others. The interiors will be quite load with equipment and features in typical Hyundai style. Space and comfort will be the main focus of the company when it launches the SUV here
As for the engine options, it is expected that Hyundai will bring the Styx with two engine options. this includes a 1.0 litre, three-cylinder petrol unit along with a 1.5L, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. The petrol engine will churn out about 118 Bhp of power and 171 Nm of torque. The diesel engine, on the other hand will churn out close to 115 Bhp of power along with 250 Nm of torque. Hyundai might also introduce a BS6-ready 1.2L Kappa engine and a ‘SmartAuto’ AMT gearbox with the Styx.
As of now no details on pricing have been revealed. However, we expect that the car will be priced around Rs. 8 lakhs to Rs. 10 lakhs price range. The Hyundai Styx will face challenge from cars like Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and the upcoming new Mahindra XUV300. The sub-4 meter SUV segment is the largest selling SUV segment in India and almost every manufacturer has launched their player in the segment. With the Styx, Hyundai will try to dominate the segment in the same way it conquered the compact SUV segment with the Creta.
