Hyundai Xcent compact sedan to be launched in India on the 12th of March

Hyundai has lined up the Xcent compact sedan for a launch in India on the 12th of March, 2014. Like the Grand i10 hatchback on which the Xcent is based, the compact sedan is a product tailormade for the Indian car market. Measuring under 4 meters in length, the Xcent will rival the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Honda Brio Amaze in the big volume compact sedan segment. The compact sedan category is currently good for a sales figure of 25,000-30,000 monthly units. The arrival of the Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest is expected to further expand this number.

Both petrol and turbo diesel engine options will be offered on the car. Since the Xcent is based on the Grand i10 platform, it will share a lot of parts with its hatchback sibling. From the engines and transmissions to the feature set, the Xcent will dig into the parts bin of the Grand i10 hatchback. However, the Xcent will also get additional features to ensure that it has enough ammunition to be a class leader given its position as a late entrant in the compact sedan category.

The 1.2 liter-4 cylinder Kappa petrol engine (79 Bhp-112 Nm) and the 1.1 liter-3 cylinder turbo diesel (69 Bhp-160 Nm) engine are the two options that will be offered on the Xcent. A 5 speed manual gearbox will be standard with a 4 speed automatic transmission offered on the petrol variants as an additional gearbox option. Given the Grand i1o’s spacious interiors, the Xcent is expected to be one of the more spacious compact sedans sold in the Indian car market. Talking of space, expectations around another upcoming compact sedan – the Tata Zest – are quite high.

Hyundai is aiming at sharp pricing for the Xcent. The petrol version of the car is likely to start at under 5 lakh rupees with the diesel variant starting at under 6 lakh rupees. Meanwhile, the major additions on the Hyundai Xcent compact sedan in comparison to the Grand i10 hatchback are:

  • Automatic climate control
  • Reverse camera
  • Rear seat with a greater recline angle

The Xcent compact sedan will carry over the following features from the Grand i10 hatchback

  • Twin airbags
  • Dual tone dashboard finish
  • Engine Start-stop button
  • Keyless entry
  • Rear AC vents
  • Cooled glove box
  • 2 DIN audio player with 1 Gb storage memory
  • Steering mounted audio controls
  • Auto folding wing mirrors
  • Kick up boot lid
  • Cup holders in rear seat armrest
