British sporty hatchback brand Mini, under BMW’s stewardship, has hopped on to the please-all approach. Mini will offer a new, 5 door version of the Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks, alongside the 3 door models. The UKL platform based cars are being showcased at the ongoing Paris Motor Show, after which they will go on sale internationally.
The 5 door, Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks infuse a big dose of practicality to the Mini hatchback range. Mini will be hoping that the 5 door, Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks attract a new set of family car buyers, for whom practicality and everyday usability are key car buying considerations.
Meanwhile, Mini expects the 5 door Cooper hatchback variants to sell at lower numbers when compared to their 3 door siblings. The Mini 5 door Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks are likely to make their India debuts next year. Later this year, Mini is expected usher in the 3 door variants of the 2015, fourth generation range of Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks into India.
Coming back to the 5 door Mini Cooper and Cooper S, both hatchbacks get a 72 mm longer wheelbase in addition to the extra set of doors. The overall length of the cars also increase by by 161 mm. These increases in wheelbase and lengths translate into increased legroom for the rear seat passengers and a larger boot volume of 278 liters.
With an eye on practicality, Mini has also equipped the five door model of the Cooper and Cooper S with 60:40 seat split on the rear seat. The seat split increases luggage room manifold, with the boot capacity of the car going up to 941 liters. The Mini 5 door Cooper and Cooper S are designed to appeal to those who need hatchback that blends sporty and practical.
The 5 door Mini Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks can be specified with four engine options. The base engine on the Mini Cooper is a 1.5 liter, triple cylinder turbo petrol motor with a 136 Bhp output. The Cooper S makes do with a 2 liter, turbo petrol motor that outputs 184 Bhp.
The Cooper D and Cooper SD models use 1.5 liter, triple cylinder and 2 liter, 4 cylinder turbo diesel motors, with 116 Bhp and 170 Bhp outputs. All engines of the Mini Cooper and Cooper S 5 door models get two transmission options – a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic.
