Nissan showcased the Datsun RediGo in concept form at this year’s Indian Auto Expo. As a concept, the RediGo looked more like a mini SUV/crossover than a budget hatchback. While the Datsun RediGo is expected to hit Indian roads in May 2015, as the third Datsun car for India, after the Go and Go+ models, a new report on a German daily quoting BusinessWeek suggests that the least priced model from the low cost Japanese car brand will be a mini SUV/crossover instead of a hatchback.
The RediGo will be based on Renault-Nissan’s common module family (CMF) and will share its underpinnings with the Renault A-Entry/XBA hatchback. A 3 cylinder-800 cc petrol engine designed and developed in India will power the RediGo and the XBA. A diesel engine is not a part of the equation. As the RediGo will be the least priced Datsun car in India, a starting price that is well under 3 lakh rupees is expected.
Now, at that price, the RediGo could be the lowest priced crossover in the world if the rumours surrounding this car have some substance to them. The Micro SUV segment will make its debut in India next year. While the Mahindra S101 code-named SUV is confirmed to be a Micro SUV, the Datsun RediGo taking a crossover route could make it the second such offering in the Indian car market.
While the RediGo showed plenty of muscle in concept form, it remains to be seen if the concept’s design language will percolate to the production version. Our bet for the RediGo remains that of a high riding hatchback with copious ground clearance. The RediGo will roll out of Renault-Nissan’s Oragadam factory, off Chennai. The hatchback is a clean sheet design with a near 100 % localization level to keep purchase and ownership costs at a bare minimum.
