The all-new Maruti Suzuki WagonR is just months away from launch in India. The car will be in its 3rd generation in the Indian market, and is expected to get larger, yet lighter, due to the extensive use of lightweight, high tensile steel. Here is a speculative render showing what the India-spec new WagonR could look like.
As the render indicates, the new WagonR will have completely revamped front end styling, aimed at making the tall boy hatchback a lot more contemporary than the current model. Apart from this change, the new car will also be larger than before, inside-out. Safety is expected to go up by a few notches thanks to new crumple zones, twin airbags, a seat-belt warning light, reverse parking sensors and ABS being offered as standard. The new WagonR is expected to retain the 1-litre K-Series petrol engine, with 5-speed manual and AMT options.
The 1-litre K-Series engine, which puts out 67 Bhp-90 Nm, is expected to become more fuel efficient thanks to the car getting lighter. The new WagonR will also get CNG and LPG dual fuel models for specific markets of the country. The interiors of the car will get more spacious thanks to the larger exterior dimensions. The dashboard will be totally redesigned, and the top-end model is expected to offer smartphone connectivity to the car’s infotainment system. Power steering and air conditioning will be standard across all WagonR models.
The WagonR is one of India’s largest selling hatchbacks, which could soon see heightened competition from the all new Hyundai Santro – a car that will be launched in the next few months. The all-new WagonR is, therefore, coming at just the right time for Maruti. Next year, Maruti is also expected to launch a seven-seater version of the 3rd generation WagonR. The 7-seat variant will offer three rows of seating and will feature a longer body to accommodate the additional set of passengers. It’ll share its mechanicals with the regular WagonR.
