Some of India’s super rich are a peculiar lot. While most like to live out the luxury they’ve earned or inherited, some just like to keep it low key. We saw both ends of the spectrum in Part I of India’s super rich businessmen and their cars. It’s now time to go a step further and look at another edition of India’s swish set and how they move around on the ground.
Of the two Ambani siblings who control vast amounts of money, Anil Ambani is the flashier one. The man’s got a Lamborghini Gallardo to give him speed thrills. And when in the mood for luxury, has other options that include the Mercedes Benz S-Class’, Rolls Royces and Range Rovers of this world. Anil Ambani is also known to drive by himself in Bombay. Vijay Mallya, quite simply is the big daddy of cars among corporate czars. A keen racer in his younger days, the man’s got a taste for the fast life. Known for his penchant for vintage automobiles, Dr. Mallya even has a museum displaying his cars in the United States. Closer home, an island of Bombay houses some of the four wheeled beauties that the man enjoys, away from peering eyes. From Mercedes Benz S-Class and Rolls Royce luxury saloons to the sporty Maserati Quattroporte, Vijay Mallya has been spotted in a wide range of cars on Indian roads.
N.R. Narayana Murthy
Despite making his billions in information technology, N.R. Narayana Murthy, one of India’s best known IT moguls, prefers to keep it very low key. A Skoda Laura is the most expensive car that the man owns while the humbler Mahindra Scorpio helps take on Bangalore traffic. Like his peer Azim Premji, Narayana Murthy believes in simple living, high thinking. Narayana Murthy and Azim Premji aren’t the exceptions. There are a few more moneyed, famous Indians who use everyday, budget cars to get around.
The Chairman of Tata sons, Cyrus Mistry, is a car nut himself, preferring to indulge in his love for automobiles privately. How else do your explain his X’Mas gift to his son Firoz? Cyrus Mistry gifted son Firoz a 1971 Jaguar E-Type. Now, that’s some taste. In public though, the big man at Tata sons, prefers to use daily beaters such as Honda CR-V, a Jaguar XF luxury sedan and even the likes of the Tata Safari Storme and the Aria.
The colourful and dapper Yash Birla is known as much for his party hopping lifestyle as the various businesses he runs and owns. The man’s also got a fleet of luxurious and flashy automobiles that he sometimes drives by himself. The Porsche Boxster is one such automobile that Yash Birla favours, to get him to parties about town. From the sporty Mini Cooper S to many BMW 7-Series luxury saloons, the flashiest man of the Birla family also the rarely spotted Mercedes Benz R-Class MPV.
