Snapshot: Indian roads are narrow and traffic infested, with the wheeled and non-wheeled kinds. If you like driving, the only time you can actually enjoy your car’s performance is when you’re at the traffic lights or perhaps on an open stretch of road. While twisties are out of the question in most Indian cities for the dangers that can lurk ahead of them, flooring the loud pedal when you see an empty stretch is perhaps the adrenaline rush one craves while driving in the city. In tune with this frame of mind, CarToq lists out India’s 5 fastest hatchback available for under 8 lakh rupees.

Honda Brio 1.2 Petrol

Pocket-rocket is an apt term for the Honda Brio. Compact, light and with an eager 1.2 liter i-VTEC petrol engine that loves the higher reaches of the rev range, the Brio is a fast car off the lights. With a 0-100 Kph run of 12.5 seconds, the Brio represents great bang for the buck, of the acceleration kind. The car’s 1.2 liter petrol engine outputs 88 Bhp-110 Nm while the manual gearbox is a slick 5 speed item. The Brio weighs in at 925 kilograms, a major advantage in the power-to-weight stakes. The car starts at 3.99 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Delhi. Top-end variants come with ABS+EBD and twin airbags.

Toyota Etios Liva Sportivo 1.5 Petrol

A car that looks dull and uninspiring but one that goes like stink in the straight line. That’s the Liva Sportivo 1.5 for you. Although Toyota has tried to spruce up the looks of the Liva by adding the Sportivo body kit and graphics, the car doesn’t really move our cheese when it comes to design. Move it does though in the real world’s performance stakes. Light and tinny, the Liva Sportivo comes with a 1.5 liter petrol engine that is good for a solid 89 Bhp-134 Nm, and a 5 speed stick shifter. This engine propels the 925 kilogram Liva to 100 Kph from standstill in 12 seconds. Around the bends, the Liva Sportivo is still a work in progress and is nowhere as planted or fun as its sedan sibling. The car is priced at 6.13 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Delhi and for this kind of money, you get twin airbags and ABS+EBD as standard fare.

Hyundai i20 1.4 Diesel

Like the Liva, the Hyundai i10 CRDI is a straight line scorcher. With a 1.4 liter turbo diesel engine that outputs 89 Bhp-220 Nm, the i20 gets up to speed quickly, with a 0-100 Kph sprint in 13 seconds. The refined 1.4 liter motor only encourages you to rev harder while the 6 speed manual gearbox slots in nicely. Show the i20 a corner or two and this is where the car’s overly light steering – which is a hoot to weave in and out of small gaps – and the soft suspension set up poops the car’s party. Strictly for the straight line traffic light GP specialists, the Hyundai i20 Diesel starts from 5.95 lakh rupees. The top end, ABS+EBD and Airbags equipped version of the car costs 7.53 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.

Volkswagen Polo 1.2 GT TSI Petrol

The only turbo petrol hatchback in the sub-10 lakh rupee category, the Polo 1.2 GT TSI is aimed squarely at the driving enthusiast. The car features a 1.2 liter TSI turbo petrol engine with a meaty torque band where it matters. The turbocharger added into the equation means that the Polo 1.2 TSI has nice in-gear acceleration, stuff that would otherwise require rapid downshifting on high strung petrol motors. Talking about highly strung petrols, the 1.2 TSI will out accelerate every other petrol car this side of 10 lakh rupees, what with a 0-100 Kph timing of 11 seconds. The 1.2 TSI motor outputs 103 Bhp-175 Nm and comes with a 7 speed DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox that allows you to focus on steering while it takes of lightning quick gear shifts. The Polo 1.2 GT TSI is priced at 7.8 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Delhi, and the car comes with twin airbags, ABS+EBD and ESP as standard.

Volkswagen Polo 1.6 GT TDI Diesel

The fastest diesel hatchback in India, the Polo TDI is also the most powerful hatchback in the country with its 1.6 liter TDI motor outputting 103 Bhp-250 Nm. A 5 speed manual gearbox powers the front wheels of the car. The Polo 1.6 TDI scampers to 100 Kph from standstill in 10.5 seconds while top speed is a heady 190 Kph. In a nutshell, the Polo 1.6 TDI is not just the fastest accelerating hatchback built in India, but is also the hatchback with the highest top speed in the country. Since the 1.6 liter TDI turbo diesel engine returns great fuel efficiency when driven sedately, the Polo GT TDI can shift seamlessly between Jekyll and Hyde modes. Like its GT TSI sibling, the GT TDI model comes with twin airbags and ABS+EBD. The car is similarly priced with the GT TSI model, at 7.8 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Delhi.

  1. Why maruti suzuki swift included ?
It’s far better than brio and liva
    Power of 85 bhp
    0-100 under 12.5 seconds
    With plush interiors

  2. According to me this should be the list

    1. Polo 1.6 GT TDI
    2. polo 1.2
    3. Suzuki swift zxi
    4. Fiat punto
    5. Liva sportivo

  3. Car to car Swift Petrol is equally fast off the blocks as a Brio or even maybe a Liva Sportivo. The swift is nimble like a rabbit running for its life and in the corners neither the Brio nor the Sportivo stand a chance against it.

  4. i really dont understand our indian mindset. Nothing does corners or is rock stable like punto and polo in this class and people are worried about speed not speed with stability

  5. Swift has stability…like seriously are you all kiddin….people buy swift because its vey cheap and spares part are too cheap rest itz just a scrap and as interiors and technology is considered swift is a generation behind than the above mentioned hatchbacks and swiftwill never rise its level

  6. Polo may be a good car but when compared with Swift sales it won’t even sell 50% of the sales. Similarly i20 sales is also around 7000 per month average which is very less when compared with swift. Make sure the author of this article is aware of the sales chart of the respective models before giving a blind statement and charts. Doesn’t look professional …

  7. i dont understand why low mentality people are comparing i20 liva brio polo with swift..these all hatchbacks are much generation ahead when compared with swift..its just like comparing your old 800 with s-class…and over here cars ranging between 6 to 8 lakhs are being considered not a small baby turtle swift or any same segment bullshit and i20 has good stability upto 150kmph just need some guts to ride at such high speed after all itz not a turtle swift and as price is considered if you want to buy fastest car with high tech features high performance and stability then price doesnt matters at all

  8. It has been already tested and proven by car enthusiasts that not only i20, Verna fluidic also carp and unstable during high speed in highways . Shaurya Singh if you don’t know read the blogs to understand and follow auto magazine reports for better understanding. Again i20 sales is not even 50% of what Swift sells, also Liva is a Holly crap car fit for nothing other than taxi ..

  9. well its better to see the likes Mr.f1mohan…if experts havnt mentioned swift then there is seriously a big one thing why dont you contact cartoq experts if you are so enthusiastic about your mini turtle swift and reading blogs and magzines do not give you knowledge and let me tell you one thing my dad owns a franchise of hyundai and maruti as well and i have experienced each hyundai and maruti car and yoou know what people say when they buy swift”its cheap than i20 but not much attractive looks comfort and performance wise”and seriously we earn much profit from our hyundai showroom rather than maruti… all this am saying on the base of ma driving experience and even from the reviews of some engineers from maruti corporation

  10. Punto may not accelerate as fast as other cars but do you need to race on city roads? As far as FASTEST is concerned , it easily does 180kmph on highways and stays steady like no other in class. If you say fastest please mention in Acceleration but not in TOPSPEED.

  11. Seriously, no swift?

Me and my friend raced in swift and i20 and guess wot, in a corner i20 drifted off the road, crashed and the repairs cost 1.85laks. We wer doing around 140-160kmph. Swift ws cool and like a leech in the corner. Nd the i20 has 16″ Continental tyres, abs etc nd the swift had only 15″ standard tyres.

I have driven polo, swift, i20, punto and Liva . Nd i20 is my last choice here, it is fast but no stability at all. Plus even with 4 disk breaks, i didn’t get the breaking confidence in i20 which i had in others. The other three are great. i20 has many goodies inside but it aint a driver’s car. Nd i would rather not talk abt liva as it is only good as a taxi. Personaly i like swift as it is a lot easier to maintain, handles well and has good interiors(way better htan polo’s)

  12. mr shaurya u are brilliant,,,and all the swift owners are duffers,,,,,first drive swift then write a comment ,,,,,and what u do with the inside features like Bluetooth, camera, rear parking sensors,,if there is not a good engine, which has low maintenance……..,,we can add features like Bluetooth, camera, rear parking sensors,,,,but can not add a…[Read more]

  13. every indian knows what is swift,,,,look at the sales figure and then talk,,,around 2lakh in the year 2013-2014,,,i think all 2 lakh people are not duffers …hope u should understand which people have lower mentality ,,,

  14. Please mind the headline of the topic. No interior,no stability, no maintenance, no sales figure. So why trying to speak about the only car you have driven? Talk to the engineers they will tell u in India inch per inch quality product ( in that range) is as follows.. fiat>skoda>vw>ford>toyota>honda>Chevy>reno>mahindra>maruti> hyundai>tata

  15. Mr.Sambit i mentioned i own maruti showroom as well as hyundai i know the level of swift …..and seriously 2 lakhs people are duffers…you guys buy swift because its cheap but i20 isnt in you nd your 2 lakhs people……low aerodynamic design…more noise less output lacks back passenger space alot…..totally waste..bttr way to spnd on ritz rather swift,,byt happy to know those 2 lakhs people nd guys lyk you can read the brochure but sorry to say still cannot live in tne practical world….well i suggest you to opt MBA marketing and see how companies make fool of you guys nd you guys easilly get trapped………..

  16. u think all r cheap people and u r rich ,, ,,,, i think u have to study math 2 lakh is greater than 1 :-P ,,, and we always practical about cars ….by the way i didn’t want to tell anything bcoz people who buy swift they know what is swift capable of ,,,,, people who spend money on volkswagen polo gt can afford i20,,,,but they dont ,,,bcozz they know about the quality :-P ….keep my advise and try a swift petrol ones ,,, ;-)

  17. Mr sambhit mahapatra…bttr go 4 potfolio on ur bike…..dswebsite Iisnt your scene…..nd seriously if you are maths genius then mental hospital is best place for you to spend your whole life… nd swift petrol for test drive huh….dude read my comments with glasses I hv a showroom of maruti and hyundia…I have driven race gone for drag race, drifting sprint…I knw the level of swift…..totally sluggish and scrap huh…..

  18. hi people .., swift is a good car, great value for money.., just hope that Swift Sport makes it to india with 1.6-litre engine produce 136HP, and swift has great handling as its designed on a rally platform…. when u talk between indian swift and i20 – i would go with swift as it handles better than i20 in corners…

  19. After reading all the above comments…i thereby conclude that shaurya singh kanwar might have been accidentally hit by a thrustful swift…that’s y he’s saying this fucking shit about it…n don’t telme that ur dad owns a bloody franchise of Hyundai n suzuki… I’ll give you an open challenge…come n compete with my swift zxi…i’ll take d shit out of u… I’m also from chandigarh… The one’s who can affort swift can also afford an i20…stop bitching as if i20 is way to expensive than swift. And trust me..ur like a moron longing for life.. 8437797779 feel free to contact u bastard

  20. TBH Shaurya is spot on with opinion, most of Swift owners I know own VDi (non-abs version) and they buy it because its cheaper than i20 and quite typical about spending money on ABS & Airbags.

German car fan boys before hating Hyundai just mind yourself that no German car in market will be fully loaded unless you can afford a 3series, if it weren’t for Hyundai presence in market. Moreover my friends who were VW Polo fans admitted Polo engine doesn’t have Torque you get from i20

Fastest Hatchback Diesel is i20 CRDi, you’ve to accept even if your ego hurts. Go checkout for 0-100 timesheets of stock cars considering Fiat Palio is no more
(however 2010 i20 CRDi engine feels more powerful than the next year models. You can literally feel pushed back to seats while you do a drag no other car in segment does it.)

I agree Punto have best ride quality the advantage is from 15 inch alloy and suspension but its 90bhp power delivery is Linear and no match for non linear CRDi under hood of i20.

Fastest cars are decided on 0-100 and on clear tracks not on roads with potholes or twists and turns. BTW i20 sucks on 2nd gear turbo lag but manage to do 0-100 in 11 secs.

  21. some one can tell he has a showroom ,,,,,, i also a BMW showroom and a TATA showroom ,,,,, and tata cars are far better than bmw cars ,,,,,, some peoples are making nice jokes that also mentioned above ,,,, hope the person will understand

  22. Khumaan kaushik….plz do mind run language nd if I own a showroom none of ur business gt dat thing….u live in chd funking bad for u then….I don’t give shit to ppl lyk u..keep barking lyk a street dog I don’t give a dam nd my middle figure salutes ur attitude..keep barking nd to…don’t challange me for race or ny stunt if I can beat guys on Jaipur Delhi highway easily den u r just a bloody kid in front of me nd the cell no.u gave plz use such indirect threats In front of someone else..hence u dog u proved that the guys of chd just have fucking show off nd nothing else..are u guys really so vellas uff….nd listen keep on barking I won’t say anything else as I have a high class

  23. Shaurya Singh kanwar’s comments prove how jealous he is from the swift owners. He spend some extra bucks thinking of buying a better car(i20) but eventually realised that he gave up a great car like swift to get a crap like i20 lol now he is badly butthurted and trying to defame swift as much as possible but ending up by making a fool of himself. :-D chalo friends give him some consolation and tell him that i20 is also good. :-D but remember it doesnot even stand against the mighty swift

  24. Common brothers stop fighting like babies for best hatchback in India….. We all know its the SWIFT!!! I’m from Delhi, I own Fortuner, Verna CRDI, Swift ZDI, Etios Liva GD & Duster dCI (actually I live in a joint family that’s why) …. Believe me out of all these I think Swift is the best … In handling , in power, in top speed, etc it is the best hatchy … I do know space wise it is after liva but thats the only drawback … Otherwise for a date it is the the best pal … Let Shaurya say whatever he feels… But we know what’s the best …. Its the “SWIFT(DI)!!!”:-]

  25. m out of it..all i know is i suffered a bad experience with maruti motors….keep on saying what all you wanna say…..i need no consolation and owe no explanations bark untill you all are tired..thanks and goodbye

  26. I offen take my car Chevy Beat Petrol on 4way and it does 140Kmph with stable control. Though 120-130 kmph is safe.. Crossing 145 kmph, vibration on steering can be felt. I think 1.2 chevy petrol head is far ahead of any other 1.2 engines . I had given a tough fight with 2014 verna, and once i20. My toughest was once with a Santro Xing who was giving me a better chase. Verna and i 20 only gains during their 100-140 speeds because chevy beat take a little time to reach 130 from 80… My two cents

  27. To answer Mr Ewan Abbas’s Question, Can a brio be beaten by a Wagon R ?
Only in your dreams. If the brio is driven by a kid, then may be you can. Brio has 88 horses under the hood with a weight of 925 KG. while the Wagon R has only
68 horses with the weight of 870 KG Which means the Wagon R is going to eat All the dust from a Brio. But being said that, cars like Polo, Swift, I20, Liva are good cars even though they have some cons too, Liva having the least (least features inside the cabin but with good comfort and great AC with chilled Glove box). I 20 lacks at the handling department, Swift in the durability department, Polo in the maintenance cost, Punto in after sales support, cost and fuel economy department. Though liva has less horses it has good power to weight ratio and strong midrange with toyota’s trusted support. So all these cars One or two points up or down in the chart. And yes Definitely Brio can be added to this list.
