Snapshot – Diesel cars have come a long way in India. From being labelled as oil burners and even fit only for the commercial market, many diesel cars are now on the performance enthusiast’s radar, and this includes those in the budget segments as well. Common rail direct injection and turbocharging has changed the diesel car landscape like nothing else. So, here we are, with India’s fastest diesel powered cars priced under the 10 lakh rupee mark.
Hyundai Verna 1.6 CRDI
The Hyundai Verna 1.6 CRDI has a lifeless steering and soft suspension, two factors that see car nuts scurrying away from the C-Segment sedan. However, folks who want a bullet in the straight line must remember that the car is powered by a 1.6 liter-4 cylinder turbo diesel engine with 126 Bhp-260 Nm on tap. This smooth and super torquey diesel motor is mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox. The car hits a top speed of 188 Kph, in the process dispatching the 0-100 Kph run in just 10.6 seconds. Prices of the Verna 1.6 CRDI start from 10 lakh rupees.
It takes a lion’s heart and mild suicidal tendencies to chase top speeds on the Verna. So, if you belong to the saner set, what are your other options?
Volkswagen Vento 1.5 TDI
Though the Volkswagen Vento Diesel can’t beat the Hyundai Verna in terms of out and out performance, the sedan can run rings around the Hyundai not just around the corners but also in the way it holds itself together at high speeds in the straight line. The Vento simply inspires confidence at high speeds while the Verna can actually scare you silly.
These factors mean that the German sedan is what enthusiasts prefer over the South Korean C-Segmenter. The Vento’s 1.5 TDI with the 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox hits 100 Kph in 11.3 seconds, with the manual gearbox equipped variant managing the same run in 11.94 seconds. Top speed is 186 Kph, with prices of the car starting from 9.03 lakh rupees.
Volkswagen Polo GT TDI
While the Volkswagen Polo GT TDI can’t beat its petrol powered sibling in terms of sheer acceleration and top speed, the diesel hatchback is not a slouch, not by a big margin. The car hits the 100 Kph mark from standstill in just 11.52 seconds, with top speed rated at a very fast 188 Kph. The 1.5 liter TDI motor of the Polo GT makes 103 Bhp and 250 Nm. The gearbox is a five speed manual item that many driving enthusiasts find more involving than the 7 speed twin clutch DSG automatic unit on the GT TSI. How much? 8.48 lakh rupees.
Skoda Rapid 1.5 TDI DSG
Underrated and understated but with a ride and handling package that actually puts it ahead of its Volkswagen sibling, the Skoda Rapid C-Segment diesel sedan is fast to 100 Kph, hitting the number from rest in just 11.6 second. The car shares its 1.5 liter TDI turbo diesel engine, and the 7 speed automatic and five speed manual transmission options with the Vento. Top speed is identical too, at 186 Kph. What works in favour of the Skoda sedan though, is the lower asking price of 8.81 lakh rupees.
