India’s first Mahindra Thar CNG on video

Mahindra Thar is one of the most popular 4×4 SUV in the market. We are all aware that the current waiting period on this SUV is almost over an year. Few weeks ago, we featured a story where a vendor explained how he can actually install a CNG kit on a Thar, if you are worried about fuel efficiency. Well, we now have a video where the same vendor has finally installed the CNG kit in a current generation Thar. Video shows how the car performs after installing the kit.

The video has been uploaded by Green Fuels on their YouTube channel. In this video, the vendor shows the aftermarket CNG kit that has been installed in the car. The kit has been installed in the turbo petrol version. The engine on Mahindra Thar is direct-injection unit and it needed a special kit due to the same reason. The normal CNG kits won’t be a success in this case.

The vendor then takes the car for a spin after installing the CNG kit. The car gets the CNG level indicator switch installed on the center console. Other than that, no other changes are seen inside the car. Driver mentions that the transition from petrol to CNG feels seamless and there is no jerk of lag in the performance. The engine feels quick and the response time is almost similar to the petrol version.

Driver accelerates the SUV hard and takes it over 100 kmph mark to check for any faults and he says that there is no difference. As we all know, Mahindra Thar is a popular 4×4 SUV and the driver even engaged 4H and drove the SUV to test the performance. The CNG kit and Mahindra Thar cleared all the tests with flying colours and the vendor said the customer was very satisfied with the performance.

Vlogger shows how the kit has been installed in the car. Under the hood, injectors, reducers and special ECU for direct injection engine vehicles were installed in the car. The wires, pipes and hoses were all installed neatly under the hood. Moving to the rear, the boot space of the SUV has been compromised as a 14 kg gas cylinder is now placed there. The refilling nozzle for the CNG was not placed under the bonnet but, it was customised and placed next to the petrol filler cap.

The installation process looks very neat and the customer also looks very happy. The same vendor had earlier mentioned that he can even install CNG kit in recently launched Mahindra XUV700. Mahindra is offering all-new Thar with both petrol and diesel engine options. Both the variants come with 4×4 as standard. The petrol version is powered by a 2.0 litre mStallion turbo petrol engine that generates 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. The diesel version is powered by a 2.2 litre mHawk turbocharged engine that generates 130 horses and 320 Nm of peak torque. Both petrol and diesel engine options come with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission options.
