Is the new Chevrolet Sail U-VA over priced?

General Motors has finally launched the Chevrolet Sail U-VA a starting price of Rs.4.44 lakh for the base petrol model and Rs.5.87 lakh for the base diesel model. The new Sail U-VA has been priced at a substantial premium to the Ford Figo.

With such pricing, Chevrolet has pitched the new Sail straight up against the mighty Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i20. Here is a detailed look at Chevrolet Sail U-VA diesel prices vis a vis its top three competitors.

Is the new Chevrolet Sail U-VA over priced?

Does Chevrolet Sail U-VA have the features to justify the price?

Base Variants: The base variant of the Sail, priced at Rs.5.87 lakh costs Rs.30,000 more than Swift’s base version and is Rs.9,000 cheaper than Hyundai i20.

What you get in the Chevrolet Sail is an airbag, fog lamps, a tachometer, power-adjustable ORVMs, central locking and 4-power windows—some of which you will not get on the base variant of the Swift or the i20. The airbag alone justifies the price.

So, for the safety-conscious buyers, Sail U-VA is good alternative to Swift and i20. Even the Figo variant that comes with the airbag options costs Rs. 7,000 more.

Top variants: Sail U-VA LT is priced at Rs.6.62 lakh and is Rs.20,000 cheaper than the Swift ZDI and Rs.36,000 cheaper than the comparable i20 Sportz variant. Only Figo costs—Rs. 68,000—less and has almost all of the main features U-VA has.

General Motors has pitched the new Sail U-VA strongly against the Swift and i20. GM has chosen to focus on delivering more features by including substantive safety features such as airbags—for the money. It has shunned the Figo route of trying to be the cheapest car in the segment.
