Before I discuss what happened here, let me clarify that we DO NOT advocate high speed motorcycling or high speed brake tests in India. The video you see below was shot on a very empty four lane stretch in Rajasthan and has been uploaded to demonstrate how helpful ABS (anti-lock braking system) can be in real life scenarios.
During the media ride of the new Jawa and Jawa 42 motorcycle (read our review) I decided to see how much can the 42 be pushed to in terms a high speed run. While I did manage to get to 143 a while back, I decided to continue on to see how the bike fares at such speeds. I was probably a minute into the 130+ stint when I spotted a pair of goats ahead on the left side. What happened next can be seen in the video above.
As an any rider would do, I lifted off the accelerator and changed my riding posture immediately. The next thing was to apply the brakes while downshifting gently so as not to lock the rear wheel. At the same time, it was essential to check the rear view mirror for any fast moving traffic coming up behind me. Thankfully, as I mentioned above, this was a very isolated part of the 4 lane highway.
The Jawa 42 remained calm and composed with no unwanted drama apart from two audible sounds from the rear as the tyre fought hard to gain traction. The goats too stopped dead in their tracks, allowing me to pass them. It took me a few seconds to regain myself and yes, post that I rode back at a much ‘slower’ pace.
Both the Jawa and Jawa 42 come with a single channel ABS as standard. The rear wheel does not get ABS as of now – the drum set-up does gel in well with the retro looks. However, we are told, a rear disc brake is in the works that will also allows Continental Automotive to come up with a proper dual channel ABS for the Jawa bikes. Their direct rival, the Classic 350 does not come with ABS as of now – it is only offered on the more expensive Signals variant.
The Jawa models went on sale a few weeks back and bookings are open. The first dealership opened up in Pune and others will follow soon. I have booked the 42 for myself and can’t wait to get you all a detailed ownership experience soon. Stay tuned!
