The Jeep Compass is undoubtedly the hottest topic in the Indian automotive industry right now. The most affordable Jeep in India has already created quite a buzz. The American SUV brand will soon launch the all-new, made-in-India Compass in the market and here are ten things you should know about the car.
No petrol engine at the launch
Jeep unveiled the Compass earlier this year. During the unveiling, the company announced that the Compass would come with both petrol and diesel engines. Sadly, at the moment Jeep will only launch the vehicle with the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.
The diesel engine produces a maximum power of 170 Bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm. Jeep mentioned about the 1.4-litre Multi-Air petrol engine during the time of unveiling. The 160 Bhp-250 Nm petrol engine will not be offered at the date of the launch. Jeep will bring the petrol powered Compass sometime in 2018.
Launch in August
Jeep started the production of the Compass in India sometime back. On June 1st, the first vehicles from the production facility at Ranajangaon were rolled out. Jeep will officially launch the vehicle in August and reveal the price at the official launch.
But you can book it now
Jeep has started taking official bookings for the Compass. All the Jeep dealers across India are accepting bookings at Rs. 50,000. Jeep has also made it easy for the consumers by taking bookings online. If anyone does not wants to visit the dealership, the car can be booked online, through Jeep India’s website.
Shares platform with Renegade
The Compass shares the platform with a smaller SUV – the Renegade. The GM Fiat Small platform is quite unique and underpins many Fiat vehicles. A derivative of the same platform is used for the Punto and Linea among many other cars that are available in the international market.
The platform sharing enables Jeep to highly localize the product. Jeep says that up to 65% parts of the Compass are locally sourced, which will be a major deciding factor of its price. However, the Compass will not stay as the most affordable Jeep in India for long. Jeep is planning to bring the Renegade in India in 2018 that will undercut the Compass’s price.
Only top-end variant gets off-road friendly equipment
Jeep will offer the Compass in 5 variants, namely Sport, Longitude, Longitude (O) and Limited, Limited (O). Out of five, only the top-end variants Limited and Limited (O) will come equipped with the 4X4 system. While this can mean that the other variants will be priced very competitively, it could also make the 4X4 option quite pricey.
