Jeep India will announce prices for the off-roading focused Compass TrailHawk SUV later today. The Compass TrailHawk is likely to be the range topping variant but is expected to be competitively prices. This is because Jeep India has deleted some features such as auto headlamps, powered driver’s seat, and more to keep costs low. What the buyer will instead get is a 9 speed torque converter automatic gearbox, better off roading hardware and software, and improved suspension articulation including a 20 mm lift. The lift will give the Compass TrailHawk better ground clearance, which will further be boosted by re-profiled front and rear bumpers that improved approach and departure angles. Another key aspect about the Jeep Compass TrailHawk is that it will get better underbody protection with bash plates at multiple points in order to prevent underbody and component damage during off roading.
All in all, the Compass TrailHawk represents a massive improvement in off roading performance over its regular variants, and will be aimed mainly at enthusiasts seeking a comfortable, go anywhere SUV that’s compact and luxurious enough for everyday driving. The SUV will carry over the 2 liter-4 cylinder Multijet turbocharged diesel engine with 170 Bhp-350 Nm outputs, and the engine is now Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) compliant.
BS6 compliance is said to have made the 2 liter diesel engine quieter, with much of the clatter eliminated. So, refinement levels see a step up as well. The Compass TrailHawk, in its current form, has no real competition although it is likely to rub shoulders with the Hyundai Tucson AWD, which is more or a soft roader. We expect the TrailHawk trim of the Jeep Compass to be priced at around Rs. 25 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.
In the coming months, Jeep India is likely to offer the 9 speed automatic gearbox on lower diesel variants of the Compass, making the SUV a lot more attractive to buyers seeking convenience but without the additional features of the TrailHawk version, such as the high travel suspension and all wheel drive system. A front wheel driven version of the Compass Diesel with an automatic gearbox could be priced at around the Rs. 22-23 lakh mark, making it a hot seller.
The other gearbox currently offered with the Compass Diesel is a 6 speed manual. The SUV is also available with a 1.4 liter turbocharged petrol engine that makes 160 Bhp-250 Nm. The petrol engined Compass, offered exclusively with a front wheel drive layout, gets 6 speed manual and 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearboxes. The diesel gets an all wheel drive layout on higher variants.
