In future, American SUV brand Jeep could build a sub-Renegade compact SUV that measures under 4 meters in length. For now though, a platform for such an SUV doesn’t exist. The Jeep Renegade is built on the Fiat US Small Wide platform, the same platform that hosts the likes of the Fiat 500L hatchback and the upcoming Fiat 500X crossover.
Jeep re-engineered the US Small Wide platform for a higher ground clearance and 4 wheel drive capability, and the platform is now called US Small Wide 4X4. For a new compact SUV that is smaller than the Renegade, Jeep will probably have to tap into the next-generation Fiat 500 platform.
With that, a sub-Renegade SUV is more of a consideration for the future than a reality for now. On the other hand, alarger SUV sitting above the Jeep Grand Cherokee is definitely in the pipeline though. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be 7 seat model that will be larger than the Grand Cherokee SUV.
The Grand Wagoneer will be the next major new product from Jeep and the larger SUV will take on the German luxury triplet of the Audi Q7, Mercedes Benz GL-Class and the BMW X5 SUVs. Notably, the Wagoneer was a large SUV model that Jeep offered for about three decades – 1963-1991 – with the SUV said to be a kick starter of the luxury segment.
Coming to the Indian scheme of things, Jeep plans to use Fiat’s Ranjangaon factory, off Pune, to begin building compact Jeep SUVs such as the Renegade and the under-development C-Segment SUV. Apart from catering to local demand, the Indian factory will also be used to export a large volume of compact SUVs to markets across the globe.
A heavy amount of localization will be a key aspect of the made-in-India Jeep compact SUVs. Jeep is likely to begin its Indian foray early next year, with a top down approach involving the likes of the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler models.
