Jeep Renegade may follow the Compass launch in India

Jeep unveiled the Compass in India yesterday. The made-in-India Compass will become the cheapest Jeep when it is launched in coming few months. Reportedly, Jeep is also working on bringing another, cheaper SUV in India in the form of Renegade. The Jeep Renegade is based on the same platform as the Compass.

It will be of the same length as the Renault Duster. The Renegade is a neo-retro Jeep that carries the design language of the original Jeep CJ3’s styling. The entry-level SUV from the brand is a premium offering, which means it may carry a big price tag on it. In the US market, the Renegade is offered with both 4X2 and 4X4 drivetrain.

The Renegade gets the 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine that produces a maximum of 160 BHP and 250 Nm and gets a manual 6-speed transmission. The other engine option is 2.4-litre naturally aspirated MultiAir petrol engine that produces a maximum of 180 BHP and 237 Nm of maximum torque. This engine gets 9-speed automatic. Jeep does not offer any diesel engine with the Renegade

For the Indian market, Jeep may offer the same engine options as the Compass. Apart from the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine that will also power the Compass in India, there will be a 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel engine that develops a maximum of 140 BHP and 350 Nm.

Jeep has not further revealed any details on the price or specifications for the India bound model of Renegade. Jeep has also not revealed any timeline for the launch of the Renegade in India. Perhaps, Jeep will see how the market reacts to the Compass before taking any further action on the Renegade.

Interestingly, there were earlier reports that indicated that Jeep is developing a sub-4-metre SUV to take on the likes of Vitara Brezza in the market. But there is no word on its development in recent times.
