Compact SUV segment is currently one of the most popular segments in Indian market. In 2019, Kia launched Seltos SUV in the market and buyers received an overwhelming response from the customers. It competes with cars like Hyundai Creta, MG Hector, Tata Harrier in the segment. Mahindra XUV300 is another popular sub-4 meter compact SUV in the country. It is currently the safest car in the sub-4 meter SUV segment with 5 star rating from Global NCAP crash test. XUV300 competes with cars like Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet in the segment. Both SUVs belong to two different categories and here we have a video where Kia Seltos and Mahindra XUV300 are seen in a drag race.
The video has been uploaded by Arun Panwar on his YouTube channel. Vlogger starts by talking about the engine specification on both the vehicles. Both Mahindra XUV300 and Kia Seltos used here get diesel engines with manual gearbox option. Kia Seltos is powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates 115 Ps and 250 Nm of peak torque. Mahindra XUV300 on the other hand is also powered by a 1.5 litre turbo diesel engine generating 115 Ps and 300 Nm of peak torque. On paper, Kia was generating less torque than XUV300.
Both SUVs lined up for the race. Vlogger and his friend were inside the XUV300 and his other friend was driving the Seltos. Drag race race starts and surprisingly Kia Seltos took the lead early in the race. XUV300 driver was trying hard to overtake Seltos but, he was not able to close the difference between the SUVs. Seltos maintained the lead through out the race and won first round.
They do the drag race one more time and the results remain the same. Kia Seltos takes the lead and maintains it throughout the race. The XUV300 failed to overtake in second round too. For the third round, driver’s exchange the cars and vlogger and his friend were now sitting in Kia Seltos and his friend was driving the XUV300. Race starts and Kia Seltos quickly took off the line. Just like the first wo rounds Seltos won, third round as well. Even in the fourth round, the results remained same.
So what exactly happened here? How did Kia Seltos actually win all the rounds even when it was generating less amount of torque. The answer to that is the weight. Mahindra XUV300 is a sub-4 meter compact SUV but, it weighs more than Kia Seltos. Mahindra has put a lot into the build quality of XUV300 and that has affected the way it performs as well. Because of the added weight, Kia Seltos had a better power to weight ratio which helped during the race.
Another reason was the launch. Mahindra XUV300 has a rev limiter which does not allow driver to rev the car above 3,000 RPM when idle. Kia Seltos can be revved all the way to 5,000 RPM. This made a huge difference at the time of launch. Vlogger can be heard saying the same in the video as well. The results does not mean that XUV300 is a bad vehicle by any means. Both SUVs are great in their own respective segments.
