The Hyundai Creta-based Kia Seltos compact SUV was unveiled to India and the world last week, and now we have engine details of Kia’s first vehicle for the Indian market. The Seltos will be sold with three engines – two in petrol and one in diesel. All engines will be 4 cylinder units. The naturally aspirated petrol will displace 1,500cc, and will have outputs of 113 Bhp-138 Nm. The turbocharged diesel will also have a 1,500cc capacity, but with power and torque figure of 113 Bhp and 250 Nm.
The top of the line petrol will be a 1.4 liter turbocharged unit with 138 Bhp and 242 Nm on tap. Kia will offer no less than 3 automatic gearbox options with these engines: A CVT automatic with the 1.5 liter petrol, a 7 speed twin clutch automatic with the 1.4 liter turbo petrol and a 6 speed torque converter automatic with the turbo diesel. All three engines will get 6 speed manual gearboxes as standard, and will be Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms compliant.
The Seltos is expected sit above the Hyundai Creta in terms of price and positioning but could be cheaper than the likes of the Tata Harrier and the Mahindra XUV500 – two significantly larger SUVs that are likely to be potential rivals thanks to their pricing. The Seltos will get a slew of segment leading features that is expected to be a major draw among compact SUV buyers looking for something that’s refreshingly different in this segment, where most other offerings including the Creta have been around for years.
The Kia Seltos’ sharp looks will be another key selling point and already the internet is going gaga over the svelte and suave design that the SUV is styled with. In terms of equipment, the top-end Seltos is likely to get a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-speaker Bose audio system, automatic climate control, cruise control, head-up display, 360-degree camera, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, ventilated front seats, electric sunroof and more.
Notably, the Seltos will share its engines with the next-generation Hyundai Creta, which will make its official debut in 2020. However, the Seltos will be larger than the current Creta with the following dimensions: 4,315 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, 1,620 mm in height and a wheelbase measuring 2,610 mm. As for ride height, the Kia Seltos will sit 190 mm above the ground – ample ground clearance for an SUV in its class. The monocoque offering is likely to ride on 17 inch wheels on the higher variants with the lower variants getting 16 inchers. As for boot space, the Seltos will get a 433 liter boot, which should be enough to swallow two large suit cases. The SUV is expected to be launched in the next couple of months.
