While SUVs are seen by people as a go-anywhere vehicle, certain parameters need to be fulfilled for making them suitable for all types of terrains. The most important of these parameters is the presence of a fully-functional four-wheel-drive system. A majority of the SUV buyers in India buy the two-wheel-drive versions to save costs.
One such situation was faced by a driver of Kia Seltos, the whole experience of which is described in a video uploaded by the YouTube channel of “Arun Panwar”.
Kia Seltos gets stuck
In this video, we can see the driver explaining the difficult situation in which he was stuck. The diesel-manual Kia Seltos HTX+ he was driving was stuck in slushy terrain. Despite several tries, the driver was unable to pull out his Seltos comfortably.
The driver then called one of his acquaintances, who tried to pull off the Seltos by towing it with a Maruti Suzuki Baleno petrol. However, the power produced by Baleno seemed to be insufficient to pull off the Seltos easily. After this, the driver tried to lift the Seltos using bricks and a jack, but even then, he was unable to take out the vehicle.
Lastly, the driver was able to pull out the vehicle with the help of a tractor, with which it was towed. Within a few seconds, the tractor was able to pull the Seltos out from the mud in which it was stuck.
The Kia Seltos diesel manual sold here in India comes with a front-wheel-drive setup as standard. In this video, we can see that the one front tyre was partially immersed in mud, while the second front tyre was rotating freely in the air. In such a condition, the tyres were not getting enough traction, despite a consistent input of power from the throttle.
AWD or 4X4 would be a different ballgame
It is where a proper four-wheel-drive system comes into effect. If a four-wheel-drive SUV is stuck in such a situation, the driver could have transferred some power from the engine to the rear wheels using the low ratio mode. In this way, the traction from the rear tyres would have been enough to pull out the vehicle.
It is why a proper four-wheel-drive SUV is recommended to drive on loose surfaces like mud, snow and sand. While the Kia Seltos diesel-manual comes with traction control, it was not enough to provide the amount of grip required in this condition.
There are very few SUVs available with a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive below Rs 50 lakh. The SUVs offered with these systems are Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Mahindra Alturas, Mahindra XUV700, Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. Apart from these SUVs, all the other premium compact and midsize SUVs are available with front-wheel drive, which should be avoided to drive in extremely loose tarmac conditions, like the one seen in this video.
