The South Korean automaker Kia entered India with a bang by introducing its compact SUV Seltos which became an instant hit. It then continued to ride on the newly gained success by launching models like the Carnival, Sonet and Carens. Since then the company has raked in more and more sales but most recently Kia India announced that it had achieved an incredible milestone. It revealed that its sub-compact SUV Sonet, since its launch in the Indian market in September 2020, has exceeded the 1.5 lakh unit sales mark. It added that currently, the Sonet is the highest-selling model in the Kia India portfolio.
According to the data released by the South Korean carmaker, Sonet’s sales volume accounted for nearly 32% of Kia India’s total. It added that Sonnet currently holds a market share of over 15% in the sub-four meter SUV segment, which makes it one of the best-selling models in the country.
Speaking on the achievement of this milestone, Kia India Chief Sales Officer Myung-sik Sohn said, The Sonet has won several accolades not only for its design, performance, and practicality but also by creating favourability for iMT (intelligent manual transmission) and introducing the only Diesel AT in the segment,”
The company further stated that 25 percent of Sonet buyers picked the iMT transmission, while 22 percent chose the automatic transmission. Furthermore, according to Kia India, 26% of clients favour the top-spec models. In terms of drivetrain data, Kia claims that while diesel models are not the most popular in the range, they still account for 41% of overall Sonet sales. The two most popular colours for the Sonet, according to Kia, are Glacier White Pearl and Aurora Black Pearl, which account for 44 percent of all dispatches.
Currently, the Sonet comes with three engine options: a 1.2L NA petrol engine, a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine, and a 1.5L diesel engine. It also comes with a variety of gearboxes, including a 5-speed manual, 6-speed iMT, 7-speed DCT, 6-speed MT, and 6-speed AT. As for the pricing it starts at Rs 7.15 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 13.79 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec variant.
Earlier in November of last year, in celebration of Sonet’s 1 year anniversary the company launched a special anniversary edition of the Sonet in the market. Kia added some cosmetic changes to the SUV to differentiate it from regular variants. As part of the Anniversary Edition, the front grille got Tangerine coloured jewel like elements which were not seen in the regular variants.
Other changes included Orange coloured inserts on the bumper and redesigned faux skid plate at the front and rear to give a muscular look. The First Anniversary Edition badge was also seen on the grille. Kia offered the Anniversary Edition in Aurora Black Pearl, Glacier White Pearl, Steel silver & Gravity grey shades.
As for the interior creature comforts and features, the Sonet comes equipped with a touchscreen infotainment screen, electric sunroof, leatherette upholstery, multi-function steering wheel, cruise control and other now common tech and gizmos.
