Kia Sonet’s production version to be revealed on August 7th 2020: Just weeks away from launch

According to reports, Kia Motors will be unveiling the production version of the new Sonet compact SUV in the Indian market on 7 August 2020. The official launch will happen a month after the global premiere. India will be first country where the Sonet SUV will be launched, and the production version of the car will be unveiled to the international audience for the first time on the 7th of August. This is similar to what Kia Motors had done during the launch of Seltos, their first product for Indian market.

The Kia Sonet compact SUV concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo earlier this year was a 90 percent production ready model. Most of the design elements on the concept are likely to be retained when it makes to the production line. Some styling elements such as the flush-fit door handles and design of the alloy wheels could be changed.

Kia Motors had plans to launch the Sonet SUV in the Indian market back in the month of May but, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation and the lockdown that followed after it, the whole plan got delayed. It is based of Hyundai Venue platform and is likely to share the engine as well. It will be a available with a 1.0 litre, three cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5 litre diesel engine.

One of the unique feature that Kia had announced in Sonet SUV was inclusion of an iMT gearbox. Intelligent Manual Transmission will allow the driver to manually shift the gear without using the clutuch pedal. It is a combination of manual an automatic gearbox.  The same feature is available in Hyundai Venue compact SUV as well. Just like Seltos, Kia is expected to price Sonet very competitively.

The sub-4 meter compact SUV segment is very popular in India and almost every manufacturer has at least one model in this segment. This segment is ruled by cars like Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and Ford EcoSport. South Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors, who entered Indian market last year had showcased concept of their third product – Sonet, a sub-4 meter SUV, at the Auto Expo earlier this year. Kia has been testing the Sonet SUV for quite some time and the brand is now ready to launch the all-new sub-4 meter compact SUV in the market.
