KTM Duke 390 or BMW G 310R: Who should buy what [Video]

The BMW G 310R has become the talk of the town after BMW India officially started taking bookings for the upcoming bike. The entry-level BMW naked bike is made in India and is already available in many international markets. A lot of prospective buyers of KTM 390 Duke will also look at the BMW G 310R and vice-versa. It should be noted that the KTM 390 Duke is priced at Rs. 2.4 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi while the BMW G 310R is expected to get a price tag of around Rs. 3.5 lakhs! But if you’re waiting for the BMW G310R, this video explains the difference between both the bikes and here is who should buy what between the two.

Want a sharp looking bike

KTM 390 Duke

KTM launched the all-new 390 Duke last year and it gets a completely revamped design with a sharp headlamp, tank extensions and a tail section. The 390 Duke is inspired by the design of 1290 SuperDuke that makes it a head-turner everywhere. The G 310R, on the other hand, gets a very subtle design and can get lost in a sea of two-wheelers on the Indian roads.

Want a super quick bike

KTM 390 Duke

Both the bikes are powered by a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. However, the displacement of the 390 Duke is much higher than the BMW G 310R. KTM 390 Duke uses a 373cc engine that churns out a maximum of 43 Bhp and 35 Nm. The BMW G 310R is powered by a 313cc engine that develops a maximum of 33.6 Bhp and 28 Nm.

The extra power makes the KTM 390 Duke super quick when compared to the G 310R. The KTM 390 Duke can do 0-100 km/h run in 5.1 seconds while the BMW G 310R takes 6.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h from standstill.

An everyday bike with adequate performance

BMW G 310R

The BMW G 310R is not as aggressive as the 390 Duke. The bike gets a much-relaxed riding position and the engine is much laid-back than the 390 Duke. This allows comfortable daily commute on the G 310R. The BMW naked bike will serve people who are looking for an everyday bike with enough power perfectly.

Affordable ownership

KTM 390 Duke

Both the bikes are made in India but the BMW G 310R will carry a much higher price tag on the spare parts and regular maintenance. This is due to the premium brand of BMW that will attract a higher maintenance cost. KTM 390 Duke will prove to be much easier on the pocket when it comes to the cost of ownership. Sourcing spare parts for both the bikes should not be a problem as the manufacturing takes place in India.

Looking for exclusivity

BMW G 310R

The KTM 390 Duke is an extremely popular bike and it has been around for a while now. There are many 390 Dukes on the roads now and it has become a common sight. If you’re looking for something which makes you feel exclusive on the road, the BMW G 310R is something you should go for. The high price tag will keep many buyers away from the upcoming bike, which should make it a rare sight on the road. Also, the BMW logo would make it quite popular on the road.

VFM is preference

KTM 390 Duke

The KTM 390 Duke offers a lot more for a lesser price. The BMW G 310R is expected to get a price tag of around Rs. 3.5 lakhs, which will be a lakh more than the 390 Duke. The KTM flagship bike in India offers a much longer list of features and is more powerful than the BMW G 310R, making it more value-for-money bike.

Want a long list of features

KTM 390 Duke

The KTM 390 Duke is loaded to the brim with features. It gets a full TFT colour console with Bluetooth connectivity to pair smartphones. It also gets switchable ABS, slipper clutch, full-LED headlamp, LED turn indicators and LED tail lamp. The BMW G 310R offers no such gimmicks and even the slipper clutch is missing from the bike.

Want an expansive service network

KTM 390 Duke

The KTM operations are handled by Bajaj Pro Biking in the Indian market. The Bajaj Pro Biking dealerships and service centres are quite well spread throughout the country and can be easily accessed from most cities. The BMW Motorrad India is yet to expand the service network that makes it limited to only bigger cities. If you are out on the highway often, then the KTM 390 Duke should be the choice as you will never be far away from a service centre in case there is a breakdown or mishap.
