Mahindra Marazzo MPV’s petrol version confirmed for India: To be cheaper than diesel

Just yesterday, Mahindra launched a brand new MPV for the Indian market, the Marazzo. The Marazzo gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine as standard, and this status will continue for at least the next year and a  half. Come April 2020, the MPV will also get a new petrol engine that is likely to be a turbocharged unit.

The petrol engine  of the Marazzo will also be a brand new unit, just like the diesel motor. It’ll be jointly developed by Mahindra and  Ssangyong, and is mainly meant to help the Marazzo meet the upcoming Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms, which are much tighter than the current BS4 emission norms.

The petrol-powered Mahindra Marazzo will also be cheaper than the diesel-powered version considering the fact that adding complex emission control equipment to diesel engines to meet BS6 norms is expected to result in a price increase of about Rs. 60,000-70,000.

On the other hand, building a petrol engine to meet the BS6 norms is expected to cost just Rs. 5,000 – Rs. 15,000. As of now, the displacement of the petrol engine for the Mahindra Marazzo is not known, and so are the power and torque ratings of such a motor. Considering that the diesel motor makes 121 Bhp – 300 Nm, expect a similar power rating for the petrol motor, but with a slightly lower torque rating. We expect the prices of the petrol-powered Mahindra Marazzo to start from Rs. 9.5 lakhs.

The new petrol engine for the Marazzo was confirmed by Dr. Pawan Goenka, the president of Mahindra & Mahindra, at the launch. Currently, the Mahindra Marazzo is sold with 4 variants – M2, M4, M6 and M8. The MPV is quite competitively priced, with a starting price of just under Rs. 10 lakhs. This pricing positions the Marazzo between the Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta – two of India’s best-selling MPVs. The Mahindra Marazzo is a unique offering, in that it’s the world’s first body-on-ladder MPV that has a transverse (east-west direction) engine mounting and a front-wheel drive layout.
