Mahindra’s President for the Automotive Sector, Rajan Wadhera, is said to have revealed the launch timelines for three new vehicles the automaker will launch in the passenger car market in India. The first of the trio will be the Mahindra Marazzo MPV, which will be launched before Diwali 2018. The second will also be launched ahead of Diwali, and will be the XUV700, a rebadged G4 Ssangyong Rexton, luxury SUV – Mahindra’s most expensive vehicle ever. The third vehicle will be the S201 compact SUV that will operate in the sub-4 meter segment. The S201 will arrive into India by the end of this year.
Mahindra has just ceded third place in the Indian market to Japanese automaker Honda, whose recently launched the Amaze compact sedan clocked over 10,000 units in July 2018, propelling it ahead of Mahindra. The trio of launches that Mahindra has lined up will allow the automaker to reclaim the third position in India. Of the three new vehicles, two have potential for big volumes. Both the S201 and the Marazzo will operate in the sub-Rs. 10 lakh segments, and are expected to bring in at least an additional 5,000-6,000 monthly units. The XUV700 is not expected to do more than 500-1,000 units per month considering the fact that it’ll sit in the Rs. 25 lakh segment.
The Marazzo MPV will take on the Toyota Innova Crysta and will have the biggest footprint of any Mahindra car produced in India. The long wheelbase MPV is expected to be sold in 7,8 and 9-seat variants. It will be a global product. The S201 compact SUV is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli but has been shortened to fit the sub-4 meter segment whose current market leader is the Maruti Brezza. The XUV700 also has a South Korean connection, for the 7-seat luxury SUV is a rebadged Ssangyong Rexton G4. All the above vehicles will get turbocharged diesel engines. Petrol engines will be offered on the Marazzo MPV and the S201 compact SUV.
