Contrary to media reports, Mahindra has officially stated that the unveiling of the Mahindra Thar 5-door will not take place on August 15th. The company released a social media post clarifying that the highly anticipated Thar 5-door will not be launched on the mentioned date.
August 15th has been a significant date for Mahindra since 2020, when they unveiled the second-generation Thar in its three-door version with various powertrain options and stylish upgrades. In the following year, Mahindra unveiled the highly successful all-new XUV700 on the same date.
In 2022, Mahindra introduced its new ‘BE’ brand for born-electric vehicles, unveiling a range of exciting electric vehicle concepts that provided a glimpse into the future of Mahindra’s electric vehicle offerings. Given the anticipation surrounding the Thar 5-door, it was expected that Mahindra might showcase the SUV on August 15th, 2023, ahead of its anticipated launch in the first quarter of 2024.
However, Mahindra has now confirmed that the Thar 5-door will not be showcased on August 15th. In a social media post, the company announced that the launch of the Thar 5-door is scheduled for 2024 in India, as per the decision made during the recently concluded Quarter Results media interaction. It remains unclear if Mahindra will showcase any other new product on August 15th, which has become a significant event day for the company.
The Mahindra Thar 5-door will be a long-wheelbase version of the existing three-door Thar model available in the Indian market. This longer wheelbase will allow for a five-door layout with two additional doors for rear seat passengers. Based on the test mules spotted on Indian roads, the Thar 5-door is expected to feature pillar-mounted rear door handles while retaining much of the design from the three-door variant, including the front and rear profiles.
The Thar 5-door is likely to share the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with the three-door Thar, albeit in different power outputs. The expected timeframe for the Thar 5-door’s arrival in the Indian car market is the first quarter of 2024.
