Mahindra just unveiled the G4 Ssangyong Rexton at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. It will go on sale in India later this year but with Mahindra badging and a brand new name. We won’t be surprised if Mahindra uses the XUV700 badge on its new flagship luxury SUV, which will sit in Toyota Fortuner territory.
Apart from the Fortuner, the XUV700 will also take on the Ford Endeavour. It’s expected to be a lot cheaper than the Fortuner-Endeavour duo, with a starting price closer to Rs. 20 lakhs rather than Rs. 25 lakhs. It is expected to be sold as a value-for-money offering. To keep costs low, Mahindra will CKD assemble this SUV in India, and will also localize many parts.
The G4 Rexton will seat 7 and will offer a powerful turbo diesel engine displacing 2.2 liters. No, it’s not the mHawk engine that Mahindra uses on multiple SUVs sold in India but a diesel engine developed by Ssangyong for use globally. The 2.2 liter diesel engine on the Rexton will make 178 Bhp of peak power and 420 Nm of peak torque.
It’ll use a 7 speed automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes Benz. A four wheel drive transfer case will also be available with this engine-transmission combination. A manual gearbox option is not likely to be offered, even on the base trims.
The G4 Rexton will be feature filled. From luxurious material used for the dashboard and door trims to leather seats, the SUV is expected to exude a level of finesse, refinement and luxury previously unseen on a Mahindra product. Powered seats with ventilation, dual zone climate control, 9 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, Traction Control, an electric sunroof, GPS navigation, an 8 inch infotainment touchscreen based system with smartphone connectivity, HID headlamps, cruise control and LED DRLs, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers are the various features the new SUV is expected to pack in.
