Mahindra dropped the plan of bringing any SsangYong branded vehicles to India due to their low popularity. Instead, the Indian brand has decided to bring a new compact SUV based on the SsangYong Tivoli. Mahindra has codenamed the upcoming vehicle as S201 and it will be available in two different versions.
This is the first time the shorter version of the S201 has been caught testing on the camera. The sub 4-meter vehicle caught on test has shorter overhangs and a modified rear hatch door. The sub 4-meter version of the vehicle can be seen with steel rims.
The sub 4-meter version of the S201 will compete with the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon while the longer version of the vehicle will take on the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster. Both the test mules have been spotted together for the first time and the 7-seater version can also be seen alongside the Hyundai Creta in the pics.
The test mules reveal details like projector headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and fog lamps integrated into the bumper. The lower part of the bumper can be seen wrapped in black cladding that runs through the wheel arches and the body. The rear hatch door of the sub 4-meter version seems to be in the initial design days and is not a finished product.
The SUVs will be based on the SsangYong X100 platform and both of them will get monocoque body shell. Mahindra and SsangYong have also developed all-new engines in-house to power the vehicles. There will be a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that will be offered with the upcoming model.
The petrol engine will get direct injection and turbocharger that will make it produce around 140 Bhp. The diesel engine will get an output of 125 Bhp. The vehicles are expected to be showcased at the Auto Expo 2018.
