Mahindra Scorpio EX launched at Rs7.2 lakh

By CarToq Editor

When Mahindra & Mahindra had launched the Scorpio they knew little of what an SUV frenzy the vehicle would start in India. Now the company has launched the Scorpio EX variant for Rs. 7.2 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune, BSIV).

“At Mahindra, our endeavour has always been to offer the best-in-class products and this new offering from the Scorpio stable is no exception,” Vivek Nayer, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, was quoted as saying by Motoroids.

He added that with Scorpio’s great mileage and refined performance, he is sure that the Scorpio Ex will be an instant hit with young customers looking for an affordable entry point into the Scorpio franchise. Further he mentioned that the Scorpio has kept up its momentum with constant up-gradations and new offerings.

The Scorpio EX is powered by new 2.5 litre m2DicR engine that produces 75 bhp of maximum power and 220 Nm of maximum torque. Mahindra claims the Ex accelerates from 0 – 60 km/hr in 11.2 seconds.

As per ARAI ratings, the Scorpio EX returns a mileage of 14 km/litre. The Scorpio EX is available in four colours; Rocky Beige, Diamond White, Fiery Black and Mist Silver. Also read: Value-for-money SUVs: Tata Safari vs Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra has equipped the Scorpio EX engine with micro-hybrid technology that stops the engine automatically during long idling especially at stop-go city traffic, thus ensuring lower fuel consumption. The features on board the Scorpio EX include a digital immobilizer (a safety feature to prevent the vehicle from theft).

This will give Scorpio lovers another reason to buy the new Scorpio Ex, which takes forward all that we loved about the Scorpio family.

The existing variants of the Scorpio, LX, SLE, VLX 4×2, VLX 4×4, VLX AT 4×2 and VLX AT 4×4 are priced ranging from Rs. 8.01 lakh to RS. 12.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). These variants are powered by m-Hawk engine that produces 127 hp of maximum power.

In the present day SUV market the Mahindra Scorpio’s only direct rival is the Tata Safari. The Safari’s base model can be bought for as low as Rs. 8.19 lakh and the prices climb up to Rs. 12.56 lakh for the top end variant (ex-showroom, Delhi). Also read: Mahindra Thar CRDe 4×4 (off) road test

With regard to sales, Mahindra sells around 4,000 Scorpios every month while Tata manages to sell only 2,000 units of Safari every month. This however is no surprise considering the huge number of Scorpio vehicles you can see on Indian roads.
