The country’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer, Mahindra Automotive, has been working on the development of the Thar 5-door for quite some time now. The model over the last few months has been spotted on multiple occasions. Each time, the test mules of the forthcoming Thar 5-door reveal something new about the vehicle. Recently, another test mule of the SUV was spotted in the country. This time around, the spotted vehicle featured a brand-new front grille and a new set of headlights. Both of these were completely different from the 3-door Thar.
The most recent spy shots have come by the courtesy of Carversal. The pictures show a fully camouflaged Thar 5-door test mule with a different grille from its 3-door counterpart. The 3-door Thar comes equipped with a much more traditional 7-slat grille. However, the new 5-door Thar’s grille had only 6 slats. Another difference is that the 3 doors have single vertical slats, but the new 5-door Thar had hollow rectangular elements, which were also divided by a horizontal line in between, giving the grille a totally different appearance.

Another important highlight of this particular Mahindra Thar 5-door test mule was that it came with a new set of headlights. Mahindra launched the Thar 3-doors with a basic halogen headlamp set; however, in this new Thar 5-door, the company seems to have upgraded the headlights to LED projector headlights. This was a much-needed upgrade as the stock headlamp did not perform that well. Apart from these two changes, there were no updates on this test mule of the Thar 5-door.
Just a few days ago, another test mule of this SUV was spotted. At that instance, an all-new, much larger touchscreen display was seen on the SUV’s dashboard and center console. The exact dimensions of this new, larger touchscreen infotainment system screen are not available. However, what we do know is that most likely it will come featured with connectivity features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features may include driving telematics as well as other important information about the SUV.
In terms of design, the all-new Mahindra Thar 5-door will come equipped with two additional doors in the middle. These doors will help in increasing the efficiency and practicality of this SUV. Apart from this major change, most likely all of the convenience and safety features from the three-door Thar will be carried over to this new Mahindra Thar 5-door.
In terms of the drivetrain options, according to sources, it will retain the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines from the Thar 3-door, both of which will be available with manual and automatic transmissions. Furthermore, previous spy images also showed that there will be a 4X2 option as well, along with the standard 4×4 option. As for the launch date of the new five-door Thar, it is anticipated that the SUV could be making its debut sometime in the first quarter of next year, in 2024. In terms of pricing, we can expect the Thar 5-door to be launched in the range of Rs 14-15 lakh.
