Mahindra recently launched their much-awaited SUV, the XUV500, at an aggressive starting price of Rs. 10.80 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base two-wheel drive variant and Rs. 12.88 lakh for the top-end all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant.
The XUV500 is now available in 17 cities including the metros. However, the AWD variant is available only in the metros. Mahindra hiked the price of XUV500 by up to 3 per cent in January 2012. The base variant was made dearer by Rs. 30,000 while the mid variant’s price was increased by Rs. 50,000 and the top-end variant’s price went up by Rs. 55,000.
If you’re a buyer looking for an SUV in this segment, you only have four options apart from the XUV500, i.e. the Tata Safari (Rs. 8.18 – 12.15 lakh), Mahindra Scorpio (Rs. 7.59 – 12.21 lakh), Force One (Rs. 10.65 lakh) and Skoda Yeti (Rs. 15.35 – 16.72 lakh), the Yeti being a 5-seater SUV. First let’s take a look at the heart of the XUV.
Engine: The XUV500 is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The diesel motor is coupled with a VGT (variable geometry turbocharger) and makes 140 bhp of max power and 330 Nm of max torque. The ARAI-certified mileage for the XUV500 is 15.1 kmpl, which is better than that of the Tata Aria (13.51 kmpl) but less than Skoda Yeti (17.61 kmpl).

Base Variant: XUV500 W6 – Rs. 11.10 lakh
The XUV500 W6 does not get GPS navigation, side and curtain airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, Hill Hold and Hill Descent control.

Mid variant: XUV500 W8 2WD – Rs. 12.45 lakh

Top-end variant: XUV500 W8 AWD – Rs. 13.43 lakh
