Mahindra’s XUV300 has been doing fairly well recently in the Indian market. It is one of the most feature-loaded compact SUV in the segment. The XUV300 is also the safest in the segment as it scored 5 stars in the Global NCAP crash test. Thanks to the SsangYong Tivoli’s platform on which the XUV is based. Now, the homegrown manufacturer is working on introducing a new engine to the XUV300. The details of the engine have been leaked through a Delhi RTO document.
The document reveals that the new engine will be the 1.2-litre mStallion petrol engine that we first saw at the Auto Expo 2020. The new engine is turbocharged and features direct injection. It produces 130 PS of max power @ 5,000 rpm and 230 Nm of peak torque @ 1,500-3,750 rpm. Initially, the engine will only be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The AMT gearbox might get launched at a later stage.
Earlier, it was expected that the mStallion engine will be offered only with the Sportz variant. However, as per the document, Mahindra will be offering the mStallion engine with all the variants. The XUV300 is offered in four variants, namely W4, W6, W8 and W8 (O) trims.

The mStallion engine will also be priced slightly higher than the current 1.2-litre engine. Mahindra still might continue to offer the existing 1.2-litre petrol engine because offering the XUV300 only with a mStallion engine would increase the price. The XUV300 is already priced on the higher side. So, to stay competitive in the segment it makes sense for Mahindra to continue to offer the existing 1.2-litre petrol engine. We have seen other compact SUVs being offered in two petrol engine options where the less powerful one is more affordable and the more powerful one is priced on a slightly higher side.
It is not like that the current engines of the XUV300 are not powerful. In fact, the XUV300’s engine produces segment-leading torque figures. The current 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine puts out 110 PS of max power and 200 Nm of peak torque. The 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 115 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 300 Nm. Both the engines are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed AMT gearbox.
The new mStallion engine will make the XUV300 the most powerful in the segment. Currently, the most powerful compact SUVs are the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet. Both of them share the same 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that puts out 120 PS of max power and 172 Nm. It comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed intelligent Manual Transmission, depending on the variant. But still, it is the XUV300 that produces the most torque in the segment.
XUV300 Sportz variant
The Sportz variant of the XUV300 that we saw at the Auto Expo 2020 came with cosmetic changes too. It came with a Sportz decal on the exterior and red brake callipers. The cabin design was the same as the regular XUV300 but it was now finished in an all-black theme for a more sporty appearance. There were also red accents throughout the interior.
