Mahindra XUV400 Vs Tata Nexon EV Max: Specification comparison

World EV Day in India saw big announcements from the two biggest home-grown automobile brands in the country. While Mahindra unveiled the XUV400 compact electric SUV, Tata Motors announced that it will be launching the Tiago EV in the coming days. Out of these two, we know how the XUV400 has panned out in the real world. Unlike the XUV300 on which it is based, the new Mahindra XUV400 EV is not a sun-four-metre SUV with a compromised rear design.

The new all-electric Mahindra XUV400 is aiming straight at the Tata Nexon EV Max, which is currently Tata’s most premium offering in its all-electric lineup. While Tata Motors also has Nexon EV Prime with a lesser powerful motor and smaller battery pack, the specifications of the XUV400 are comparable to the Max variant. We have compared both the Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon EV Max head-on, and have come up with some observations which might help you choose one of the two.

In terms of dimensions and size, the Mahindra XUV400 is hands-down a clear winner, as it is not a sub-four-metre SUV like the Tata Nexon EV Max. The XUV400 is around 207mm longer, 1mm wider and 18mm taller than the Nexon EV Max. The wheelbase of the XUV400 is also around 102mm longer, which should help it offer a more spacious cabin. Also, with an increase in length, the XUV400 gets a substantial boot space of 378 litres, which is also around 28 litres more than that of the Nexon EV Max.

Both the Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon EV Max get almost the same-sized battery pack – 39.4 kWh battery pack in the XUV400 and 40.5 kWh battery pack in the Nexon EV Max. However, compared to the 437 km range from the marginally bigger battery pack in the Nexon EV Max, the XUV400’s battery pack offers a longer range of 456 km.

Also, both the electric SUVs have front-wheel-drive configurations, though the XUV400’s 147 bhp electric motor is more powerful than the 140 bhp electric motor of the Nexon EV Max. It also produces a higher torque output of 310 Nm and helps the XUV400 to achieve a quicker 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.3 seconds, which makes the XUV400 a better performer over the Nexon EV Max.

Both the Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon EV are based on their IC-engine versions, though in comparison. However, it is the XUV400 which looks like a more comprehensive attempt at making you feel like you are driving a different vehicle. On the inside, it is the Nexon EV Max which feels a bit more premium with a dual-tone black and beige cabin and a 7-inch full-TFT display in the instrument console. If it is comparable to the price of Nexon EV Max, it has a high chance to overtake the sales of Nexon EV Max with better specifications working in its favour.
