Mahindra XUV500 Petrol Automatic launched in India; Much cheaper than Jeep Compass AT SUV

Mahindra has just launched the petrol variant of the XUV500 crossover in India. This is the first time that the XUV is available with a petrol engine. The XUV500 Petrol is available in a single G AT variant, and is priced at Rs. 15.49 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. This makes it much cheaper than the Jeep Compass Petrol AT, which starts from Rs. The XUV500 uses a 2.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 140 Bhp-320 Nm. The gearbox is a 6 speed torque converter automatic sourced from Aisin of Japan. The XUV Petrol Automatic is front wheel driven. The turbocharged petrol engine, called the mHawk, shares its design with the diesel engine. This also means that it will have better low end and mid range torque like a diesel engine. However, the top-end performance may not be like a conventional petrol engine as the torque is expected to tail off after 4,000 rpm.

The XUV500 Petrol comes with the following features as standard: An 8 way adjustable driver’s seat, a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system, Logo projection lamp on ORVMs, Static bending headlamps, ESP with rollover mitigation, Android Auto, Emergency call assist, Fully automatic temperature control (FATC), Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Intelligent light sensing headlamps, Smart rain sensing wiper, Tyre-tronics, Cruise Control, Push button start and Passive keyless entry. Thw XUV500 is a 7 seater.

The Jeep Compass Limited, on the other hand, features a 1.4 liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 160 Bhp-250 Nm. The five seat SUV offers a 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox, and a front wheel drive layout. It is expected to be faster than the XUV500 Petrol. ABS and twin airbags are standard. However, features such as cruise control, automatic headlamps, tyre pressure sensors, and automatic wipers are missing. For some of these features, you need to opt for higher prices variants of the Compass, which pushes the cost to over Rs. 20 lakhs.
