The country’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer, Mahindra, is generating significant buzz with its highly anticipated electric vehicle, the Mahindra XUV700 EV. The excitement surrounding this forthcoming model has reignited as spy images of the car undergoing testing have surfaced. It is believed that Mahindra is making notable progress in its development. This recent sighting follows the unveiling of five concepts by Mahindra & Mahindra last August, which were introduced under the XUV.e and BE sub-brands, along with their anticipated launch timelines.
One of the key aspects that sets the Mahindra XUV700 EV apart from its internal combustion engine counterpart is its distinctive design. The XUV.e8 concept showcases a fresh design language that will be featured across the entire range of zero-emission SUVs, albeit in a more subdued form. In the latest test mule, the electric vehicle retains the same body as the existing XUV700 but exhibits minor alterations to the front fascia. The grille section, along with the bonnet, pillars, roofline, and rear bumper, remain camouflaged. However, the design of the slats in the grille bears resemblance to those of the regular XUV700. The test mule’s exterior is finished in a striking copper shade, similar to that of the recently launched XUV400.
Dedicated to sustainable mobility, Mahindra’s upcoming electric vehicles are expected to utilize the INGLO skateboard architecture, which has been specifically designed for electric platforms. While there is speculation regarding the powertrain options for the Mahindra XUV700 EV, it remains uncertain whether Mahindra is testing a new electric drivetrain specifically for this model or if it has broader applications for future electric vehicles. What is known, however, is that the upcoming XUV.e8 is expected to have larger dimensions compared to its internal combustion engine counterpart. According to Mahindra, the XUV.e8 will measure approximately 4,740 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height.
The first model to hit the market is likely to be the XUV.e8, with a scheduled release by December 2024. Excitement among automotive enthusiasts has escalated further with the recent leak of the first-ever spy images of the BE.05 electric SUV. For those unaware, the first-ever test mule of this EV SUV was spotted undergoing testing at Mahindra Research Valley, located on the outskirts of Chennai, almost one year after its first showcasing in the United Kingdom. From its first sighting driving in the wild, the BE.05 SUV test vehicle appeared to be quite similar to the concept shown last year. However, closer scrutiny revealed slight differences. Currently, the exact launch date has not been revealed, but it will most likely hit the dealership floors by October 2025.
The BE.05 SUV retains the concept’s peculiar four-door SUV-coupe style, giving it a distinguishing look. In terms of dimensions, the actual figures of the test mule have not been revealed, but the BE.05 concept measured 4,370 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, 1,635 mm in height, and had a 2,775 mm wheelbase. The production version is planned to have a comparable footprint. Just like the XUV.e8, underpinning the BE.05 will be Mahindra’s brand-new INGLO EV skateboard platform.
As per the reports, the specific powertrain details for the BE.05 have not been disclosed; however, it is known that the platform will employ a standardized battery pack design with Blade and Prismatic cell structures. The battery sizes will range from 60-80 kWh, capable of fast charging at up to 175 kW, enabling an 80 percent charge in less than 30 minutes, depending on the model. Mahindra estimates that the 80 kWh battery will deliver a driving range of approximately 435 km to 450 km under the WLTP cycle.
