The Mahindra XUV700 is one of the most technologically advanced and safest cars in the country. It has scored a perfect 5-star safety rating from GNCAP. However, recently an owner of an XUV700 shared his near-death experience and highlighted a huge safety concern regarding this SUV. The owner revealed that even after flipping over 6 times, the front airbags of the SUV did not deploy. Thankfully, he still managed to come out with a few minor injuries.

The incident of this extremely terrifying accident has come courtesy of Tejeshwar Reddy from X (formerly Twitter). The owner, in his tweet addressed to Anand Mahindra, narrated his entire story. He stated that on the early morning of April 25th, 2024, while traversing NH44 near Dhone, Andhra Pradesh, his XUV700 AX7 was involved in a severe accident.

He elaborated that despite the vehicle rolling over six times, the front airbags of his SUV failed to deploy. He narrated that this left Kiran and the passengers with him exposed to significant risk. Kiran stated that he was in shock and disbelief after discovering the malfunction of the vehicle’s safety features.

Was the driver wearing seat belts?

Kiran, in his tweet, highlighted that despite properly wearing seat belts during the crash and rollover, the front airbags did not open. He added that this is a catastrophic event. Kiran highlighted that this incident raises serious doubts about the efficacy and reliability of the XUV700’s advertised safety mechanisms.

Do front airbags deploy during a rollover accident?

For those who may not be aware, front airbags are typically designed to deploy during frontal collisions. Their primary goal is to provide protection for occupants against head and chest injuries. They cushion the impact between the occupants and the interior of the vehicle.

However, in the case of a rollover accident, whether or not front airbags deploy depends on the specific design of the vehicle’s safety system. It also depends on the sensors the safety system of that vehicle utilizes.

Some vehicles are equipped with rollover sensors that can detect the vehicle’s angle and rate of roll. This then triggers the deployment of airbags if certain thresholds are met. However, these sensors are often integrated with the vehicle’s stability control system.

They help in determining if a rollover is imminent and activate the appropriate safety measures. This includes deployment of the front and curtain airbags to provide additional protection to occupants.

The ultimate decision to deploy front airbags during a rollover accident is influenced by a combination of factors. This includes vehicle design, safety system capabilities, and the specific circumstances of the accident. So it is hard to say that the front airbags should have been employed in this case or not.
