Mahindra & Mahindra has plans of launching two compact SUVs in India during 2015, code-named the S101 and S102. We now have a launch timeline for these SUVs. According to Dr. Pawan Goenka, the Head-Automotive at Mahindra & Mahindra, the new crop of compact SUVs will be launched in the second half of 2015.
While the S101 will be a compact SUV that will operate at the lower end of the SUV market, taking on B-Segment hatchbacks in terms of price and positioning, the S102 SUV (based on the Ssangyong X100) will sit higher up the value chain, going against the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster.
Both the compact SUVs will feature monocoque constructions, following in the footsteps of the XUV500, Mahindra’s first-ever monocoque bodied SUV. In line with this, the S101 and S102 will be soft roaders at best, aimed mainly at the urban crossover buyer whose other options include the Quanto, EcoSport, Duster and Terrano.
A front wheel drive layout and high fuel efficiency is likely to be the characteristics of both the upcoming Mahindra compact SUVs. Both SUVs will use a new range of turbo diesel engines that Mahindra is jointly developing with its South Korean utility vehicle making acquisition, Ssangyong.
Mahindra is also likely to launch a petrol motor on one of the two new compact SUVs it will launch in India, again from the new platform of engines that the Indian utility vehicle major is jointly developing with Ssangyong. With Mahindra betting big on the automated manual transmission (AMT) technology, which it first showcased on the Quanto at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, this very technology could filter down to the new crop of budget crossovers/SUVs that the Indian automaker has lined up for its home market of India.
