Mahindra has not officially named the product but it is expected to get the XUV700 name to gain the legacy set by the XUV 500 in the Indian market. The SUV will sell through a separate high-end showroom section that will be set-up within the existing Mahindra dealerships. It will be a premium product and Mahindra is planning to target the right customers through the new sales network. This is to ensure that the XUV700 holds its own against rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, which offer a premium sales experience.

Speaking on the announcement, Rajan Wadhera, President – Automotive Sector, M&M Ltd. said,

The Y400 is one of the most eagerly anticipated launches of this year. Positioned in the high-end SUV segment, the Y400 is a high-end, full-sized SUV that offers luxury and exclusivity in its tasteful design, lavish interiors, thrilling performance and best in class features. We are sure that it will further enhance our SUV portfolio.

The Y400 will be produced at Mahindra’s Chakan facility and is expected to get a value for money price tag to get the market attention. Mahindra officially showcased the Y400 at the 2018 Auto Expo and since then it has been caught testing on the Indian roads several times. It is the rebadged version of the SsangYong Rexton G4, which is already available in many international markets. Mahindra decided to launch the new SUV with Mahindra badges to ensure that the market gets a familiar badging on the product. The SsangYong Rexton failed to grab the attention of the market despite being priced competitively because of the foreign badge that it carried.

The XUV700 will be a full-size 7-seater SUV and will get a long list of features. The SUV is expected to get leather upholstery, soft-touch plastic, electric sunroof, a touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 9-airbag system, active rollover protection, ABS+EBD and much more.

The engine details of the upcoming XUV700 is not known but it is likely to be powered by the 2.2-litre diesel engine that powers the Rexton G4 in the international markets. The engine produces a maximum of 187 Bhp at 4,000 rpm and 420 Nm peak torque at between 1,600-2,600 rpm. It will come with an optional 7-speed automatic transmission supplied by Mercedes-Benz. The Mahindra XUV700 is expected to get a value-for-money price tag of around Rs. 22 lakhs. Even though it will be much cheaper than the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, the XUV700 will miss out on the low-ratio transfer case, which is helpful during the challenging off-roading sessions. However, it will get the 4WD system to do not-so-challenging off-roading.
