Mahindra goes the CNG way to boost Logan sales
Mahindra (M&M) has launched Logan with factory fitted CNG kit in Delhi and Mumbai. The cost of the kit is Rs. 56, 000 and the price range of Logan 1.4 litre petrol ranges from Rs. 6.04 lakhs to Rs. 6.33 lakhs (On Road, Mumbai). The CNG Kit is offered with a 2 year/50, 000 km warranty. Arun Malhotra, Senior VP of M&M said during the launch that with issues such as climate change and carbon footprint taking centre stage globally, eco-friendly transportation has become the need of the hour and hence the launch of a company approved CNG kit for Logan.
M&M claims that the running cost of Logan with CNG kit will come down from Rs. 3.93 – 6.11 per km on petrol to Rs. 1.62 – 2.26 per km.
Mahindra has employed Landi Renzo Spa which manufactures the CNG kits while Logicon will supply and fit the CNG kits to the car. It has to be noted that Landi Renzo also provides CNG kits to Tata Motors, Maruti, Mahindra and Renault globally. The CNG Kit weighs 12 kg and 9.5 kg of CNG can be filled in it. Chevrolet launched Aveo with factory fitted CNG kit in May 2010. Priced at Rs. 6.26 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi), GM claimed that Aveo CNG will return 50% more mileage than Aveo petrol while 25% more mileage than Aveo diesel.
While mileage is a great advantage for CNG powered cars, the scarce availability of CNG gas filling stations is still a big disappointment for prospective buyers who travel for longer distances. Even after all these years, it s only in cities like Mumbai and Delhi that there are enough CNG stations. Hence the manufacturers are concentrating on markets in these regions. Even then, long queues are a common sight in front of CNG stations.
The CNG Logan will likely be adopted by taxi companies which already use a the Logan a lot. Urban commuters might also take another look at the Logan, considering that there are many who buy a petrol car and add a CNG kit later. Wider availability of CNG in the country is critical for CNG cars to sell in the rest of the country, and that might take some time coming.
