Many diesel powered cars will not make the transition to BS6 emission norms once the new norms come into effect from the 1st of April, 2020. Many car makers are now aggressively clearing stock of BS4 diesel powered cars before the much tighter emission norms come into place. Two such cars are the Maruti Ciaz and the Renault Duster Diesels. Both cars are now available with discounts as large as Rs. 1.5 lakh, making them extremely attractive buys. Even Mahindra is now offering a massive Rs. 1.7 lakh discount on the Marazzo MPV.
While the Ciaz and Duster Diesels will be discontinued post April 2020, and will be sold only in petrol-engined trim once the new norms come into place, Mahindra will make the 1.5 liter diesel engine of the Marazzo BS6 compliant. However, do expect a significant price hike on the BS6 version of the Mahindra Marazzo Diesel. Currently, Mahindra is selling the Marazzo Diesel with the following discounts: Rs. 1.71 lakh off on the M8 variant, Rs. 1.09 lakh off on the M6 variant & Rs. 58,000 off on the M4 variant.
Coming to what these cars offer, the diesel powered Ciaz is offered with two engine options: a 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet engine with 89 Bhp-200 Nm and a 1.5 liter Maruti Suzuki-developed motor with 94 Bhp-225 Nm. While the smaller diesel gets a 5 speed manual gearbox, the larger motor is offered with a 6 speed manual as standard. Both engines will not be made BS6 compliant for the time being. Maruti could possibly make the 1.5 liter diesel BS6 compliant if it sees enough demand for diesel cars in future.
The Renault Duster Diesel is also available with two engine options currently, or rather two states of tune for the 1.5 liter K9K turbocharged diesel engine. The lower state of tune gets a fixed geometry turbocharger, makes 85 Bhp-200 Nm, and is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The higher state of tune gets a variable geometry turbocharger, makes 108 Bhp-240 Nm, and is paired to either a six speed manual gearbox or a six speed AMT depending on what the customer chooses. The Duster also gets an all wheel drive layout with the more powerful diesel engine.
The Mahindra Marazzo is the largest car in this discount list, with a seating capacity for 7-8 people depending on the option chosen. The MPV is powered by a 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine, which puts out 122 Bhp-300 Nm, and is paired to a six speed manual gearbox that drives its front wheels. The body-on-ladder MPV is cheaper than the Toyota Innova Crysta but pricier than the Maruti Ertiga. The massive Rs. 1.7 lakh discount means that it’s actually priced very close to the Ertiga, making it a superb buy.
