At the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesia International Motor Show (GIIMS) 2019, a concept version of the Suzuki Ertiga MPV was showcased. Reports on the internet suggest that this concept previews the 6 seat luxury MPV that Maruti Suzuki is putting together on the Ertiga platform. The 6 seat version of the 2nd generation Ertiga will have captain seats for the first two rows, making the MPV quite luxurious and spacious for both long and short trips.
The interiors are finished in beige trim and this adds to the premium appeal. The 6 seat luxury edition of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is likely to be launched in a matter of a few weeks. It’s expected to be retailed through Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA premium chain of dealerships across India. The 6 seat Ertiga is likely to be pricier than th 7 seat model, and apart from the new seating layout, is likely to get a slew of luxury features.
On the outside, the 6 seat luxury edition of the Maruti Ertiga will get quite a few changes. As the concept indicates, the styling on the front end of the MPV is sleeker. The grille is new and so is the front bumper. The vehicle sits lower to the ground thanks to side skirts, and lower front and rear bumpers. The roof gets a contrast wrap while the alloy wheels get a new design.
The concept shows low profile tyres but we expect the production version to get higher profile tyres keeping Indian road conditions in mind. Mechanically, the 6 seat Ertiga is likely to be unchanged but the India-spec model is likely to be petrol-only as Maruti plans to discontinue all diesel engined cars from April 2020, once the Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms come into effect.
The petrol engine in question is likely to be the 1.5 liter-4 cylinder naturally aspirated K-Series unit that gets a mild hybrid option as standard. This engine makes 106 Bhp of peak power and 138 Nm of peak torque, and is already available on the new Ertiga that’s on sale in India. This engine gets two gearbox options: a 5 speed manual and a 4 speed torque converter automatic.
The Ertiga 6 seater will be front wheel driven, and will be positioned as a much more affordable alternative to the likes of the Mahindra Marazzo and the Toyota Innova Crysta. The 2nd generation Ertiga already undercuts these MPVs, with a starting price of Rs. 8.35 lakhs on road Delhi for the base petrol model. The top-end ZXI automatic trim is priced at 11.11 lakhs, on road Delhi. The new 6 seat automatic petrol ZXi variant is likely to be priced close to Rs. 12 lakhs.
