Maruti Gypsy nails this super steep off road climb that every other SUV struggles with

Even though, we  Indians have soft corners for SUVs, there are only a few enthusiasts who are willing to explore the full potential of their SUVs. Most of the buyers buy SUVs to have a commanding view and dominating presence on our roads. Only a small portion of its customers actually go off-road with these machines. luckily, we have now have several off-road adventure zones and groups where in people can actually take their SUV and with guidance from experienced off-roaders, then can experience it. We have seen several videos of SUVs of different size and make getting pushed to their limits. Here we have one such video, where a Maruti Gypsy, Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu V-Cross and couple of other SUVs can be seen trying to climb a super steep off-road section.

The video has been uploaded by Anshuman Bishnoi on his youtube channel. The video shows some SUVs trying to climb a steep off-road section right next to a curve. This obstacle has been setup at Off-road Adventure zone in Gurgaon, Haryana. The obstacle has been specially developed for this particular video. The first SUV which came to climb the section was a Maruti Gypsy. The driver came and assessed the area before giving it a try. He then took the SUV in reverse and took it to a point where he can build enough momentum to climb the section.

The Gypsy driver without wasting any time, gave full throttle and without too much drama, Maruti Gypsy easily climbed the section. In the video it looked like the section was not steep enough until, the next SUV an Isuzu D-Max V-Cross came. The V-Cross driver also took a similar approach. He was accelerating hard just like Gypsy but, unlike Gypsy, it did not climb. The SUV lost traction mid-way. Driver then took it in reverse and even at the second attempt, V-Cross could not go up. It even beached because couple of times because of its long wheelbase.

After V-Cross, Mahindra Thar also attempted to climb up but, was in vain. It steep climb had bit of moisture and that was not providing traction to these SUV. Surprisingly, a Ford Endeavour which was in this group came after Thar and that climbed up the section in the second attempt. After several failed attempts, Isuzu made it to the top once. Even during that attempt, it has hit the bottom once. Many other SUVs like Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport also tried the same thing but, they were all failing.

Only Maruti Gypsy and Ford Endeavour were able to climb this section at ease. Why Maruti Gypsy was climbing easily while Mahindra Thar and other SUVs struggled?. Well answer to that lies in the weight of the SUV. Maruti Gypsy is a light weight SUV and that was one of the factor that worked in favour. Next was the short wheelbase which means, it will have a good breakover angle that lets it climb the section without getting beached. All the other SUVs in the video were either heavy or had long wheelbase or both.

The driver also did a good job. The whole thing would have been flop if the driver did not know how to act. His experience and skill were another factor. He knew how to maintain momentum to climb up the section. Another SUV that surprisingly did good in this video was teh Ford Endeavour, even though, it is bulky SUV, it managed to climb up. The powerful diesel engine came in handy here.
