Maruti S-Cross Petrol Hybrid to be more than 1.5 lakh CHEAPER than Hyundai Creta?

A report on Gaadiwaadi states that the upcoming Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Petrol Hybrid will be priced between Rs. 7.5 lakhs (for the base-model) and and Rs. 9.99 lakhs (for the top-end model). In other words, the crossover will be more than Rs. 1.5 lakh cheaper than the Hyundai Creta, whose base-petrol variant starts from Rs. 9.44 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.

Notably, the diesel variant of the Maruti S-Cross starts from Rs. 8.61 lakhs, and we won’t be surprised if the petrol hybrid model is at least Rs. 60,000 cheaper. So, even if Gaadiwaadi‘s numbers don’t stack up exactly, the Maruti S-Cross Petrol Hybrid is still expected to be about Rs. 1.4-1.5 lakh cheaper than the Creta, which is a big deal.

Recently, there were a few official google ads put up by Maruti or its agency for the Maruti S-Cross Petrol, which indicate that such a model is indeed in the works. The petrol engine for the Maruti S-Cross is likely to be the same unit that powers the Maruti Ciaz Facelift. The unit in question is the 1.5-litre K-Series, naturally aspirated unit with 104 Bhp-138 Nm on tap. Five-speed manual and four-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes are offered with this engine, and the same combination could be offered on the S-Cross as well. This engine also gets the Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System mild hybrid, which adds brake energy regeneration, torque assist and an idle stop system.

Currently, Maruti sells about 4,000 units of the S-Cross Diesel in India. Adding petrol variants to the line-up is expected to boost sales by about 50% at least. With about 6,000 units in sales each month, the S-Cross will come a few steps closer to the Hyundai Creta, whose sales stand at about 10,000 units every month. The S-Cross is already India’s second best selling compact SUV although the vehicle is more of a crossover. Even so, the S-Cross outselling vehicles, such as the Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano with just a single diesel engine options is no mean feat. Meanwhile, a formal announcement on the Maruti S-Cross Petrol’s launch is expected to happen within weeks.
