In the dynamic landscape of the automotive industry, Maruti Suzuki has once again proven its dominance as the leading SUV maker in the market. With an impressive track record and a commitment to innovation, Maruti Suzuki has outpaced its competitors and secured its position as the biggest SUV maker in the Indian market.
Maruti Suzuki, the renowned Indian car maker brand, has overtaken Mahindra and Mahindra to become the largest SUV manufacturer in the Indian automobile market in the month of July 2023. In July, Maruti sold 42,620 SUVs while Mahindra managed only 36,124 units. Maruti’s strong showing in July was led byb the Brezza, Fronx and Grand Vitara.
In July 2023, Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 42,620 utility vehicles, which represents a remarkable 167% year-on-year growth compared to the same month in the previous year. This significant growth can be attributed to sustained demand for models sold through the Nexa channel, such as Grand Vitara, Jimny, Fronx, Invicto, S-Cross, and XL6.

The launch of models like the Fronx and Jimny contributed to the increase in sales for Maruti Suzuki, leading to a cumulative SUV order book of 110,000 units. During the April-July 2023 period, Maruti Suzuki sold around 135,246 SUVs, slightly fewer than Mahindra & Mahindra’s 136,174 units. However, Maruti Suzuki is expected to secure the No. 1 SUV maker position from Mahindra by the end of August 2023, ahead of its original plan.
Maruti Suzuki’s premium sales channel, Nexa, has surpassed the South Korean giant, Hyundai and has secured the second spot in terms of automobile sales in the Indian market. All in All Maruti Suzuki is currently dominating the Indian car market with both its brands. Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa outlets sold approximately 184,200 units in the first four months of the ongoing fiscal year, compared to Hyundai Motor India’s 199,000 units. This indicates healthy competition for the No. 2 position between Hyundai, Nexa, and Tata Motors in terms of monthly volumes.
Shashank Srivastava, Maruti Suzuki’s senior executive director, mentioned that the company’s new SUV launches have helped increase its market share in the SUV segment and for the Nexa channel. Despite this success, the company aims to continue improving its position in the segment with enhanced production capabilities.
Mr. Srivastava also noted that the demand environment remains positive, with the industry achieving its second-highest monthly sales in July 2023. In conclusion, Maruti Suzuki’s strong performance not only propelled it to become the leading SUV maker but also solidified its position in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh market segment. The company’s growth is expected to continue, particularly with the upcoming festive season.
