Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Fronx: How are they different?

Maruti Suzuki put all the rumours surrounding the Baleno-based crossover by launching the all-new Fronx at the Auto Expo 2023. Launched alongside the new Jimny, the all-new Maruti Suzuki Fronx has been introduced as a coupe-like compact SUV for urban customers, which gets a whole new design inside-out compared to the Baleno on which it is based. However, given that it is a sub-four-metre offering, comparisons of Fronx with another such offering from Maruti Suzuki in the same space, the Brezza, are inevitable.

Both are sub-4m SUVs

Both the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Fronx belong to the same category of the sub-four-metre compact SUV segment, however, both target different sets of customers. While the Brezza is purely for those who prefer the traditional upright stance associated with SUVs in general, the Fronx opens doors for a new niche with its coupe-like design. Unlike the Brezza, which has more angular lines in its design, the new Fronx gets a curvy design, thus making it more aerodynamic than the Brezza in appearance.

Cabin space

Inside the cabin, expect the Brezza to offer a more spacious experience with its stall stance and more headroom and shoulder room in comparison to the Fronx. Also, when compared head-on, the Brezza offers a more SUV-like driving vision of the road ahead, with a clearer view of the bonnet. The Fronx, on the other hand, offers more car-like ergonomics and lower seating posture, which should also translate into lesser body roll at higher speeds. In terms of features on the inside, the Brezza offers all the features of Fronx, and a few more, including a sunroof.

Different engine options

The difference between both compact SUVs widens even more when it comes to choices of powertrains under the skin. The Brezza is powered by a larger-in-size 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which produces 103 PS of power and 136 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the Fronx gets two powertrain options, both of which are smaller in displacement compared to that of the Brezza.

The lower variants of the Fronx share their 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with the Baleno, which claims 90 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. The higher-spec variants of Fronx, on the other hand, are powered by a new-generation 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which claims 100 PS of power and 147 Nm of torque. The Brezza and Fronx with turbo-petrol engine get the same transmission options of a 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic, though the naturally-aspirated variants of Fronx get the choices of a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT.
