Maruti Suzuki had discontinued diesel engines from their models as part of the new emission norms. The manufacturer had announced that they will be concentrating more on petrol and CNG fuel options but, recently they came up with an announcement that they are bringing back the diesel engines on some of their existing models. Now more details are available on the new diesel engine that will be used in Maruti Suzuki models. As expected, Maruti will be using a 1.5 litre diesel engine on their models. The engine is almost ready and will be initially introduced in Ertiga MPV (which was spotted testing) and Ciaz sedan.
Other than these two models, Maruti will eventually introduce this engine to the next-generation Maruti Vitara Brezza and the crossover which Maruti and Toyota are jointly developing. The Next-generation Vitara Brezza is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2021. The new crossover that Maruti and Toyota are jointly developing is expected to be placed between Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Creta. Both Maruti and Toyota will be launching there own versions of the SUV.
Maruti had launched the facelifted version of Vitara Brezza compact SUV in the market last year and it was available with a petrol engine only. According to some reports, the next generation Brezza will also be introduced with a petrol engine initially and the diesel engine will be introduced in 2022. The new 1.5 litre diesel engine that will be seen in Maruti cars soon was developed by Maruti inhouse and the same was even used on Ertiga and Ciaz before Maruti decided to put a stop on diesel engines.

Before the introduction of the 1.5 litre engine, Maruti used the 1.3 litre Fiat sourced engine on almost all their models. Maruti Suzuki diesel engines were quite popular in the market. Maruti Suzuki had sold over 5 lakh diesel vehicle in the market back in the 2018-19. The main aim behind bringing back the diesel engine options in their models is to strengthen their market share and maintain their market leadership.
Maruti Suzuki is currently the largest car manufacturer in India. They have number of models ranging from small hatchbacks to premium crossovers in their portfolio. There is even a possibility that the engine which is introduced the Eriga, Ciaz, next-gen Brezza and upcoming crossover will also be introduced in other Maruti models like the S-Cross, XL6 and may be even Dzire and Swift. Maruti offers a range of cars just for commercial usage with Tour S badge and they might introduce the engine in those models as diesel engine offer more fuel efficiency than a petrol engine.
We all know that Maruti and Toyota are in a partnership and they have already share couple of models in the market. Toyota currently does not have a model with small diesel engine in Indian market. For Toyota, this could come out as an opportunity and might introduce Maruti’s new diesel engine in some of their model. There is a possibility that Toyota will also introduce the new 1.5 diesel engine on their Glanza premium hatchback and Urban Cruiser SUV.
