Maruti Suzuki is offfering big discounts on the SX4 C-Segment sedan on account of poor sales. The sedan will be replaced later this year by the Ciaz sedan, a car based on the Suzuki AuthenticS concept. The car was showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and the production version will be based on the Ertiga platform.
A rumour suggests that Maruti Suzuki is looking at a July launch time frame for the Ciaz sedan in India. The car’s diesel engined variants could be launched first. The engine in question is the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet motor equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger. This engine, also used on the Ertiga and SX4, outputs 90 Bhp-200 Nm.
The Ciaz will eventually get a petrol engine, again borrowed from the Ertiga. the 1.4 liter K-Series petrol motor outputs 94 Bhp of peak power and 130 Nm of peak torque. A five speed manual gearbox will be standard on both the petrol and turbo diesel engined Ciaz variants.
While earlier reports suggested that Maruti Suzuki would offer an automated manual transmission (AMT) that the car maker recently introduced on the Celerio hatchback, the latest rumour asserts that a CVT automatic gearbox would be offered on the petrol powered Celerio.
This isn’t very likely though given the fact that the only gearbox available with the Ertiga is a 4 speed automatic torque converter. Offering a CVT automatic gearbox exclusively on the Ciaz will not make sense in terms of volumes. Therefore, an AMT gearbox, that is adaptable to both petrol and diesel versions of the Ciaz seems more logical.
The Ciaz is also likely to showcase better interior quality. Maruti Suzuki has been outfitting its cars with better interiors, fit and finish, starting with the new Swift. This is expected to continue with the Ciaz as well. Expect the Ciaz’s to be priced in the ballpark of other C-Segment sedans sold in India.
