Maruti Suzuki’s next major launch for this year will be the all-new Ertiga. The 2nd generation model of this popular MPV will be launched by the middle of this year, reports Overdrive. The new Ertiga will share its HEARTECT platform with the recently launched Swift hatchback. This means a lower weight than the current model and better safety compliance due to the use of high tensile steel that is stronger yet lighter. The new Ertiga is expected to offer airbags and ABS as standard across all variants like other Maruti cars priced at 4.5 lakhs or more.
Maruti has been vigorously testing the new Ertiga on Indian roads and we hear that there will be two models of the MPV on sale eventually. One model will be a regular MPV styled version. The other one will have crossover elements such as body cladding and aggressive bumper designs for a crossover look.
Design-wise, the new Ertiga could take inspiration from the Swift say some. Other renders on the internet suggest that the new Ertiga could have all-new styling that has no resemblance to the Swift and the Dzire barring some common Suzuki family design features.
The latter approach is what we also are hoping for as it would give the Ertiga a distinct identity. If too many cars from an automaker look similar, it can get quite boring. The new Ertiga is expected to borrow new petrol and diesel engines that will first be seen on the Maruti Ciaz. These engines are expected to develop more power and torque than the current Ertiga’s 1.4-liter petrol and 1.3-liter turbocharged diesel motors. It will be interesting to see if Maruti offers AMT options on goth the petrol and diesel versions of the Ertiga. This will make the MPV extremely appealing to family car buyers who want space and convenience, in a package that’s more compact than the Toyota Innova Crysta.
