The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is currently the best selling MPV in the market with waiting periods stretching up to 3 months in some cities. The new generation of Ertiga is bigger and better than the older generation model and also gets different powerplant options. While the Ertiga is already quite a comfortable and spacious vehicle for its base variant’s asking price of Rs. 7.44 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), what we are here for today is an Ertiga with its rear portion turned into a bedroom. The video below by Nine M trekker shows how the rear passenger area Ertiga can be turned into a bedroom like space. Let’s now take a look at it before discussing on it further.
As seen in the video, the second and third-row seats have been folded to create a flat cargo area. This space is then filled with a large mattress that fits snugly in the available dimensions. A couple of pillows along with bedsheets are then added to the combination and voila! The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV here gets transformed into a moving caravan with a comfortable bed to lie down on. This makeshift yet useful technique could be used if one is going for a long distance ride with a few other companions.
However, doing so will result in almost no safety for the rear passengers as they can’t fasten their seatbelts. Moreover, in the case of an accident, the people at the rear are likely to get fatal injuries as they would fly around the cabin in case of a powerful impact. Apart from the safety concern here, the whole idea is definitely something that can be tried. Imagine getting a night of good, refreshing sleep while the MPV is munching miles away towards your destination. Around two to three people can sleep comfortably inside the car and the roof-mounted rear AC vents are an added bonus. The best part is that the whole procedure would just take a few minutes to set up and is relatively inexpensive.
Talking about the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the MPV is based on the HEARTECT platform that also underpins vehicles like Swift, Ignis, Baleno and others. It is 99 mm longer, 40 mm wider and 5 mm taller than the previous version of the MPV. Earlier this year, Maruti Suzuki also introduced the 1.5-litre diesel engine with the Ertiga that is also available with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. With the new addition, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is currently available with three engine options. There is a 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel and a 1.3-litre diesel engine option.
The all-new, in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine produces a maximum power of 94 Bhp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 225 Nm between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. The iu1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine too that generates a maximum of 89 Bhp and peak torque of 200 Nm. It gets SHVS mild hybrid system that takes the fuel efficiency to 25.47 km/l. The petrol variants of the Ertiga are powered by a 1.5-litre engine that develops a maximum of 104 Bhp and peak torque of 138 Nm. It gets a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic option.
