After being on the sidelines of the electric vehicle race, the country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, will soon enter this race. The company will be launching its first fully electric SUV, the eVX, and recently, fresh details of this SUV have surfaced. One of the Maruti Suzuki officials has revealed that this new upcoming EV SUV will be equipped with a locally manufactured battery and motors. It was also revealed that the company is planning to export the eVX from India to international markets as well.

While speaking at a conclave organized by Autocar Professional, Rahul Bharti, executive director of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, stated, “It is not enough to simply launch a model with imported batteries and motors. Our plan is that when we launch an EV, it should be locally made. So we will have a localized battery and motor in our EV, and to build scale, we will also export the model from India.”

Maruti Suzuki eVX to be priced competitively

As per reports, the company is planning to enter the Indian EV market with a competitively priced eVX. Now what exactly will be the price for the upcoming eVX has not been revealed by the company executives; however, most likely, it will be close to the pricing of the Tata Nexon EV, which will be the Maruti eVX’s main rival. Currently, the Nexon EV facelift starts at Rs 14.74 lakh and goes up to Rs 19.94 lakh.

Apart from it, the forthcoming eVX will also be taking on the MG ZS EV in India as well. At the moment, the MG ZS EV starts at Rs 22.88 lakh and goes up to Rs 26 lakh. Another one of the main rivals for the Maruti Suzuki eVX will be the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV, which has also been spotted testing in India. Most likely, the Hyundai Creta EV will also be making its debut around the end of 2024, which is about the same time as the launch of the eVX electric SUV.

As mentioned above by the company executive, Maruti Suzuki will be manufacturing the battery and motors for this eVX locally in India. Now new reports have stated that it will be producing the eVX at its manufacturing plant in Gujarat where it is already producing batteries for its hybrid vehicles. It has also been reported that the company is aiming to reach Rs 1,000 crore in exports by next year.

Apart from Maruti Suzuki, its long-term strategic partner Toyota is also working on its own fully electric SUV based on the eVX. Just like the Baleno and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, this model will be another badge-engineered model. Most likely, it will boast the same exterior and interior design and take advantage of the EV drivetrain jointly developed by both Indo-Japanese automotive giants.

In terms of the drivetrain of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX initially, the concept vehicle shown at this years Indian Auto Expo boasted a 60 kWh battery. It was stated that it will be providing an impressive range of 550 kilometers. However, new reports have stated that the production version might feature a slightly smaller 48 kWh battery, offering a real-world range of around 400 kilometers.
