The country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s booth was one of the biggest highlights of the Auto Expo 2023. Maruti launched and unveiled several new offerings at the show and took everyone by storm. The company on the second day of the show unveiled its long-awaited lifestyle 4X4 SUV the Jimny five-door. The SUV instantly became a hit and it has now been reported that it has already garnered 3000 bookings. The vehicle managed to amass this number in just two days and as it stands the waiting period for the Jimny is around 3 months.
Commenting on the bookings of the all-new Jimny, Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director – of Sales and Marketing, MSIL said, “Since Jimny is a global cult brand, there was already a section of buyers, who were eagerly waiting to buy it. Till today (14th January) morning, we have garnered 2,500 bookings, and by the end of the day we are confident of having 3,000 confirmed bookings.”
As of yet, the company has refrained from sharing any information on the prices of the Jimny and commenting on the same the Executive Director of Sales and Marketing at Maruti said, “The pricing and monthly output are very difficult (numbers) to discern at this moment. The introductory price will depend on multiple factors on what the competitor’s (Mahindra Thar) price range is, as well as input costs and total cost of production during those times,”

He further stated, “While the waitlist for this model has already gone up to two-three months, I won’t be surprised if we manage to book 10,000 units in a month or so, and customers get to wait for six months,”
According to the company, the reason behind the launches of the new SUVs – the Jimny and the Fronx is that the Indo-Japanese automaker wants to grab a bigger piece of the SUV segment pie in the country. The leader in the Indian auto industry believes that by the end of this year, the proportion of SUV sales from its present line-up, which is currently 13.9 percent, would have increased significantly due to the debut of these two models.
Commenting on the same Srivastava added, “Entry-level SUVs, which saw 665,000 units in sales last year, accounted for 21.7 percent of the PV (passenger vehicle) market and is the largest segment in the industry. Whenever the industry is growing you see a ‘sub-segment’ emerging, and we are seeing two emerging sub-segments, which is not catered to by the industry. While one is the young, urban, tech-savvy consumer who is looking for the Fronx, the second category is the lifestyle SUV off-roading which is growing. With the introduction of Jimny, this segment will grow quite a lot. As a result, our market share in the SUV space will also grow.”
However it has to be noted the company is already sitting on the open order books of around 366,000 units. Once these two new vehicles launch and hit the production line this number could also go up. As of now, the company has open orders for 91,000 units of its MPV Ertiga, 71,000 units for its subcompact SUV Brezza and 57,000 units of the mid-size SUV Grand Vitara.
