The Mahindra Thar and the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door are currently some of the most affordable 4×4 SUVs one can buy in India. Just like any car, there is a fan base for both the Mahindra Thar and the Maruti Jimny. We have seen several videos of both the Jimny and the Mahindra Thar showcasing their off-road capabilities. Both the Mahindra Thar and the Jimny have their positives and negatives, which we have discussed in the past. In this video, we have a Mahindra Thar and a Maruti Suzuki Jimny SUV competing against each other in a tug of war.
The video has been uploaded by Kamlesh Barala on their YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger, who owns a Mahindra Thar, and his friend, who recently bought a Maruti Jimny, are seen competing against each other. The video does not mention whether the Thar seen here is the petrol or diesel version. Both the petrol and diesel versions of the Mahindra Thar are more powerful on paper than the petrol-only Maruti Jimny. The vlogger and his friends prepare the vehicles for the tug of war.
Both SUVs are tied using a proper tow strap. In the first round, both the Jimny and the Thar were in 2WD mode. Both vehicles stretched the rope, and once the tension was created, both drivers started pulling each other. In this round, the Mahindra Thar showed its power and simply pulled the Maruti Jimny with it. It should be noted that the tug of war took place on a muddy road. Both the Jimny and the Thar had already dug up some mud from the track.

After the first round, the Mahindra Thar driver, who is also the vlogger, asks his friend to engage 4×4 in the Jimny while he continues with 2WD. He initially thought it might be easier for him to simply drive the car forward. However, the Jimny’s character completely changed after engaging 4×4. The SUV held its position while the Mahindra Thar was trying to pull it backwards. The Jimny could not push the Thar, but it was not going backwards either. The Mahindra Thar actually dug a hole, and the tire had started to burn. The second round was considered a tie.
For the third round, both the Jimny and the Thar engaged 4×4 and started pulling each other. In the first attempt, the Mahindra Thar stalled as it was a manual car. The Maruti Jimny looks like an automatic. In the next attempt, both vehicles started pulling each other. For some reason, the Mahindra Thar could not perform the way the owner wanted it to. The clutch on the Mahindra Thar had started to burn, and we could even see the smoke in the video. The Maruti Jimny did manage to pull the Thar a bit, and it was announced as the winner of this competition. There are several reasons why the Mahindra Thar did not win this tug of war competition. It is possible that the Mahindra Thar was not well-maintained and the engine was not performing at its best. It is also possible that the driver of the Mahindra Thar was not very experienced with such situations or competitions.
